Safe Boating Week 2026.

The Governor has proclaimed this week National Safe Boating Week and we are kicking it off here at REI in Westbrook. Reminding everyone to wear a lifejacket and other safe paddling tips.

After visiting Northeast Maritime Institute in Fairhaven, MA, some members of Maine Sea Scout Ship 243 toured Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA. This was a first visit to Big Mammie for the four Scouts that attended. The WWII Navy ships leave a lasting impression.

We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday evenings in the colder months, and every Thursday during the boating season, on the water.

Sea Scouting is a civic oriented, Co-Ed program open to youth ages 14 through 20 that teaches seamanship, leadership, and Maritime skills. Ship 243 is looking for more youth to join us.

Sea Scout Ship 243 is Chartered by the USCG Auxiliary, Casco Bay Flotilla.

Maine Sea Scout Ship 243, joined Seas Scout Ship 24 of New Bedford MA, in touring the facilities of Northeast Maritime Academy. The Scouts toured their training vessels, classrooms, and training simulators. Tomorrow Ship 243 will visit Battleship Cove.

Yesterday evening Maine Sea Scout Ship 243 had the honor and privilege to tour the brand new Training Vessel 'State of Maine'. This training ship is one of five National Security Multi-Mission Vessels assigned to the Maritime Academies of Maine, Massachusetts, NY, Texas, and California.

The impressive vessel is brand new, and the Sea Scouts received an up close and personal tour, even before the cadets have stepped aboard.

Several of our current Scouts have aspirations to attend MMA, and several past Scouts are MMA graduates.

We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday evenings in the colder months, and every Thursday during the boating season, on the water.

Sea Scout Ship 243 is wrapping gifts at Cabela's in Scarborough, ME most weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas. 100% of the proceeds goes to funding our non-profit operations.

Today Sea Scout Ship 243 visited Portland Tugboat LLC. Scouts got to tour several McAllister Tugboats, and their floating office. Scouts met with Maritime Captains and Engineers, and learned about opportunities in the maritime industry. Scouts got up close and personal tours of the engine rooms, crew quarters, gallies, and bridges.

The Ship meets the first and third Thursday evenings in the colder months.
