A grassroots group of community volunteers dedicated to actions and practices that serve to protect the environment, health and welfare of South Portland, Maine. MEETING ALERT! For 27 years, Bug Light Parks wooded area has been leased. Could it be protected by big setbacks, limiting building footprint, open space requirement, climate resilience overlay buffer - due to flood risk, disallow increased capacity of public infrastructure …etc. No one wants 3 story buildings in what we know as Bug Light Park.

Could be last say on comp plan 2040 April 21st.

CPC a meeting TONIGHT 6p City Hall. Comp Plan policy 5.C.14 calls for a “health study” before adding NEW residential zones near tank farms. Sounds good but a health study alone won‘t work. We need a mandatory EXPOSURE model. Why? because a health study will defer to Maine CDC. Maine CDC, with 10 times more lenient “safe“ standards than nearby states, has for decades always considered the 625 tons of DEP Licensed tank air pollution safe. We simply don’t want EXPOSURE. The EPA says ”There are no SAFE levels of benzene”. Gulf/Sunoco next to Bug Light was sued by the EPA in 2020 for exceeding its benzene level. Did the CDC let us know? Would a so-called health study prevent this? No. Health study or not — does it make sense to put a high growth zone next to a tank farm? 1000 ft buffer between tanks and new residential zone and no high growth zone next to tanks.
