We are closed permanently due to family medical issues. I am sorry for any hardship this has caused anyone, but family needs me right now. I don’t have the mental capacity to raise money to keep the lights on and put the load in my small volunteer group. Again I am sorry and I know so many relied on us.

Dear Friends of Open Heart Food Bank

First of all – THANK YOU - each and every one of you for making this Journey possible! You have opened our hearts bigger than WE EVER IMAGINED! We will treasure all of the fond memories and friendships that we have made over the years.

With a heavy heart, this letter is to let you know that we are closing our doors on September 22ND 2023. We definitely understand how much of an impact this will bring to you and your families. As you know, times are more expensive than they ever have been. The Ameren bill alone is a hardship for us running $800-$1200 a month. The cooler and freezer keep breaking down. With being short-staffed and trying to find volunteers, that has also contributed to our decision to close the doors. We as volunteers, also have family situations going on and it is hard on the volunteers that do show up. We thought that maybe the Village of South Pekin would have stepped in, but that was never finalized on their part. They offered $100 for the building and land and a year to year contract. I was not comfortable with yearly contract.

We wish you all the best. We will miss all of your faces and we appreciate all of your support you have given for trying to make this happen. Maybe someday in the near future, we would be fortunate enough to reopen the doors.

Wow!! What can I say? I have the BEST volunteers! They worked so hard during the heat without complaint! The building doesn’t have air conditioning and the heat index was 115 and they still showed up. ❤️ We did have some people complaining that waited, and to me this unacceptable. Our volunteers are just that volunteers they don’t get paid to show up, they show up week after week because they care and want to help. Yesterday we served 51 families at a total of 167 people. Again thank you to the volunteers that show up during the heat to make this happen, whether it is to bring the food in and sort, setting up for distribution and being their to help distribute to our families YOU ALL ARE ROCKSTARS!!

We ARE going to be open tomorrow! We are aware of the heat warnings. Please be patient tomorrow as I have a couple volunteers that can not be in the heat. We do not have air conditioning inside the building. We are open 5-7 and have plenty of food.
