No, they're not mad, they're just taking their school photo very seriously.
Anna Smith (third row from the top on the right, holding books) and some of her siblings were sent to school in Salt Lake City to receive a better education than what they could get in South Pass City.
Exposure times for photos were much longer in the 1890s so to get a good photo of everyone they needn't to stay still for as long as possible, which meant they weren't going to take their chances smiling (or they just really didn't want to be at school).
