South Padre Island Community Foundation

South Padre Island Community Foundation The SPICF was established in May, 1992 as a community oriented nonprofit 501 C (3) Corp. to support the long-term needs of SPI through worthwhile projects.

The South Padre Island Community Foundation was formed in May, 1992, originally as the South Padre Island Area Fund, a Subchapter of the Community Foundation of Texas with offices in Dallas. Some years later, the organization separated and formed independently the South Padre Island Community Foundation, a community-oriented nonprofit 501 C (3) Corporation. The organization was established to resp

ond to the long term, as well as emerging, needs of the community. Acting as a catalyst and conveyor, the South Padre Island Community Foundation, under its broad and benevolent mandate, supports worthwhile projects and channels resources to appropriate recipients within the community. Blending local traditions with current needs, the SPICF functions primarily as a grant making institution, but may also function as a conduit to perpetuate the philanthropic intentions of the donors for the benefit of the community. The SPICF is governed by a Board consisting of local volunteers with expertise and knowledge of the community and is assisted by an Advisory Board with membership throughout the area.

25 years ago this month, a serendipitous journey lead the way to this wonderful team effort which people are enjoying to this very day! The #53 happened...an incredible event in so many ways which joined the community together, educated children and adults alike, and made memories that will last forever! Some of my favorite photos are shown here. There are many more. Browse through; you may recognize some people! Happy Anniversary WW #53! ~ Karen Moore

The Historical Museum of South Padre Island is the most recent recipient of a grant from the South Padre island Community Foundation. The Museum is currently located within the South Padre Island Convention Centre. This area is a lovely place to spend some time when visiting the Island. The Wyland Whaling Wall #53, the Museum, and the outdoor boardwalks offer a splendid way to learn about the Island. Sea Turtle, Inc. and the Birding Center are nearby, as well! (The photo shows some of the display cases of the Museum.)

Updating is currently going on at the Wyland Whaling Wall #53 with "touch up" work being done due to the harshness of the sun over the years! This is the second "touch up" in 21 years after having our Wall painted originally in 1994. Beautiful!

Wyland made a point to visit Ila Loetscher, The Turtle Lady, at her home, which was at the time where the injured and cared for turtles where kept in tanks. I love these photos! Ila visited the Whaling Wall at the SPI Convention Centre while Wyland was painting and kissed her turtle! Classic!!! 1994!

The most recent donation by the SPICF to a worthy cause was the purchase of a "brick" for Allison's Wall at Sea Turtle Inc. to assist with STI's expansion...every dollar helps!

Over the years, other projects that the South Padre Island Community Foundation have been involved with include: funding of children's desks that could be height adjusted for the Laguna Madre Christian Academy (which is no longer on the Island); assistance in publishing a service brochure on Laguna Madre area native plants, a Clean Beach project, and beautification of the Port Isabel Lighthouse Park...among numerous other endeavors.

TURTLE LADY PARK - (Morningside Park): A number of years ago, the SPICF pledged the money to restore and re-dedicate this small park on Morningside Dr. to remember the inimitable Ila Loetscher, better known as The Turtle Lady, who passed away in Jan. 2004. Her efforts continue forth with Sea Turtle, Inc. FYI, you can purchase a brick from STI to benefit their new facility which is under construction.

SEA TURTLE, INC. - What an attraction this organization is for the Island not to mention the work they do to assist the turtles in so many ways! The education they provide to thousands of visitors and Islanders, along with providing hands-on appreciation of nature, is unsurpassed. These experiences help make people stewards of our fragile eco system. Have you ever witnessed a "turtle hatching release" on the beach? Memory maker! The SPICF was thrilled to have Sea Turtle, Inc. a recipient of two separate grants over the years.
