Electrocuting sand to fight beach erosion - what could possibly go wrong?

Actually, I find this idea very interesting especially as it could apply to preserving the sculptures at the Holiday Sandcastle Village. We could save a LOT on our glue expenditures... but it might be impossible to (easily) re-carve.

Inspired by the natural processes used by clams and mussels to build their shells, experts have developed a way to strengthen marine coastlines using electricity.

Quite a bit of damage to the Holiday Sandcastle Village from yesterday's heavy rain. Much of it is still currently repairable, but without a tent to cover us and more rain on the way, chances for greater damage increase exponentially, as in many cases the protective layer of glue has disappeared....

We are now assessing what can be done before the next rain band approaches.

Moving sand the old-fashioned way at Kelly's Irish Pub - must mean a new sculpture is in the pipes!

It has been a while since we have had anything to report over here on the Sand Castle Trail - so it makes us very happy to announce the beginning of a brand new sculpture at a favorite old location....

Eight years ago, Paul and Remy Hoggard (sandartist.com) created these happy leprechauns at Kelly's Irish Pub . The lads have not, er... aged well, so it is high time a new sculpture replace the old.

Paul and Remy - currently working on new sculptures at the Holiday Sandcastle Village of South Padre Island - will be heading north to Kelly's later this week to make it happen. Stop by for a cold one and to cheer them on!

For the second year running, SII has sponsored a team to promote South Padre Island Sand Castle Days at Texas Sandfest in Port Aransas.

The sculpture is located right at the south entrance, ensuring that it will be viewed by tens of thousands of beach lovers from all over Texas.

A lot of people don't realize that SPI hosts a similar event in October. It is not as big as Sandfest - which is hosting some 40 pro and semi-pro sculptors, but features many of the same. talented sand artists -- and ours is free.

We talked to a lot of folks who were very interested in coming to SPI, and one couple even expressed an interest in helping out with some sponsorship.

SSI was able to sponsor this team - comprised of Lucinda Wierenga (aka "sandyfeet sandcastle services) and Emerson Wierenga Schreiner (also Sandy Feet Sand Castle Services: Galveston) thanks to YOUR donations at the Holiday Sandcastle Village.
