First Draft Academy inspires students through Literacy in Action with Write on Sports & Write on Arts

Write on Sports (WoS) is a tuition-free literacy and journalism program created to inspire students from underserved communities and homes to improve their writing skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence through a topic they are passionate about: sports. The New Jersey-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization celebrated its 15th Anniversary in 2020 and has served more than 2,000 kids with su

mmer camps, workshops, and after school programs throughout the Garden State, including in Newark and The Oranges, and through affiliate programs in Indiana, Rhode Island and, starting soon, Colorado. WoS, founded in 2005 by former Associated Press sportswriter and national sports editor Byron Yake, uses a proprietary curriculum focused on the fundamentals of writing, public speaking, video production, and interactive media. WoS strives to be a community leader and works closely with respected educational institutions, including Montclair State University, Monmouth University and St. Benedict’s Prep in New Jersey; Goshen College in Indiana; and Bryant University and Providence College in Rhode Island, as well as world-class public sports and entertainment venues such as The Yogi Berra Museum and The Prudential Center.

Every work of art tells a story; and this summer, our students created stories of their own 🎨✨

Over the past three weeks, Write on Arts gave students the chance to explore their creativity and find inspiration all around them. Whether they were creating in the classroom or exploring a museum, every experience encouraged them to see art from a new perspective.

Thank you to our students, teachers, guest speakers, and parents for making this summer filled with creativity, curiosity, and unforgettable memories. Watching each student grow in confidence and express themselves in their own unique way has been the highlight of our summer.

Three weeks. Endless memories. 🏆💙

Over the past three weeks, our students got an inside look at the world of sports through hands-on experiences, unforgettable guest speakers, and opportunities they won’t forget.

From visiting Prudential Center to learning from professionals working across the sports industry, every day was a chance to explore what a career in sports can look like beyond the game.

Thank you to our campers, teachers, and guest speakers for making this summer one to remember.

We can’t wait to see where these future sports professionals go next!

Do you have a child in grades 4-8 who could use a boost in developing literacy skills through a multimedia project?! We are partnering with The ADP Center for Learning Technologies and their Summer Learning Lab to provide an add-on program to their suite of summer literacy learning.

THE MEDIA LAB will run on Fridays in July (July 10, 17, 24, 31) Montclair State University. Space is still available, register today!
