Hi, Stand Up Girls community! Danielle and I loved seeing you all on Monday for our session on Knowing Your Body and Knowing How to Handle Tough Situations! For our earlier session, our girls shared a lot about situations they are facing in their own schools and friend groups. We found that it’s very common to feel picked on, or left out, and came up with some strategies to help. For our later session, our 4-6th graders heard from the amazing Kate Pfeifer, a social worker who helped our girls navigate what’s true and what’s not about puberty. We finished by creating our own locker mirrors with a reminder about what makes each of us unique and beautiful. See you in June!

Hi moms (and dads) of rising 2nd-6th grade girls. If you're like most parents, there's nothing we want more than dedicated one-on-one time with our child. That's where Stand Up Girls comes in. This is a group for girls and their parent which provides the chance to spend one evening per month together along with other interesting, kind girls and parents in our community. We create a fun, warm and safe environment to learn some very important lessons about growing up as a girl today. Each session is focused on a different theme. Stand Up Girls is designed to teach girls to stand up for themselves, their peers, and become leaders in their communities. Interesting guest speakers, engaging and relevant art projects combined with pizza dinners make these monthly sessions not to be missed. Over 75 families in SOMA and surrounding towns have enrolled over the years and now is your chance. See schedule below and share with friends. Visit standupgirls.org to register. Space is limited. What an amazing Stand Up Girls session last night! Thank you to our girls and parents. Our incredible guest speaker taught us some very important safety precautions to use with social media. Our younger girls had fun performing their mock YouTube "how to" videos while our older girls learned the concept that what people post on social media is often not reality. A very relevant, thought-provoking topic for sure. Alexandra Carter

Excited or our next session, "Respect and Recognize our Differences". See you all on Mon, 4/24/17.

We came across this incredible book and had to share with our SUG community. Strong is the New Pretty is an amazing book by Photographer Kate T. Parker Photography. Stories and photos celebrating girls being themselves...kind, determined, and brave girls. It's available at Words Maplewood's Bookstore if you're local...or online too. All our SUG girls and their families will love it!

What an amazing session at Stand Up Girls! Rachel Wainer taught us all of us about "Bystander Intervention" - we learned safe and easy tricks to feel empowered in difficult situations. In addition, each girl (and lots of parents!) stood up in front of the group and talked about their female hero, a recent accomplishment, or something we find challenging about being a girl. We are so proud of our group for standing up!
