The 30-year evolution of one man’s personalized approach to painting fused glass.

Troy cut his first piece of glass in late 1995 and started fusing glass 2 years later. In 2002 he met Dick Millard and received his first lessons in glass painting. After that first romantic week at the Antrim School, he immediately began experimenting with ways to blend the traditional practice of trace and matt with the contemporary aesthetics of kiln-formed glass. He has never worked in a prestigious studio and has very little formal education, but he did have time, passion, and access to kilns. In the decades that followed Troy developed a working recipe and has distilled everything you need to know about painted/fused glass into 3 simple rules.

If you were at last year's Mesa, AZ conference, you got to see Troy demonstrate his techinique first-hand. Between the 3 bus tours, pre-conference workshops, the demos and presentations, and our silent and live auctions, this AGG conference is one you don't want to miss! The Replication of Gilded Lead Overlay Stained Glass Windows

This presentation will guide you through the process of faithfully replicating a remarkable set of stained glass windows originally created by the D’Ascenzo Studio in 1928. Lost to a devastating fire in 2010, these gilded panels were painstakingly recreated to restore the integrity and brilliance of the original design.

This project stands at the intersection of old-world artistry and modern precision—where time-honored craftsmanship meets advanced techniques to achieve an authentic and enduring result.

What follows is the story of restoration through replication…A commitment to detail, history, and artistry.

Tradition. Technology. Restoration.

"If only we knew that before we messed it all up!"

A characteristically non academic exploration of stained glass work in the UK from the 19th century to present day. Having spent a lifetime as a practical conservator, Chris hopes to inspire the listener to use logic and common sense rather than making snap decision mistakes that contribute more to degeneration than conservation.
Not for the faint-hearted, this investigation throws up many of the typical faults that many were guilty of, but wrapped up in a comedic look at what has been that should never be repeated.

To register for the American Glass Guild's conference, bus tours, pre-conference workshops (including some with Chris), and get our great hotel rate, go to https://www.americanglassguild.org/2026-nyc-nj for all you need to know!

Constraints as Catalyst

This talk looks at how Paul approaches art glass within architecture—where the realities of a project, from structure and light to budget and fabrication, aren’t limitations so much as the starting point for imagining the work. Using a range of built projects, Paul will show us how constraints can shape and sharpen ideas, and how the process evolves through collaboration with architects, designers, and fabricators.

Paul will also touch on how his work has shifted over time from traditional stained glass techniques toward a broader range of methods, including fused, laminated, and commercially fabricated glass. Rather than a departure from tradition, it has been an expansion—choosing the right process for the site conditions and intent of each piece.

We look forward to Paul sharing his work with us! Join us for the American Glass Guild 20th Anniversary Conference August 8-9! There are special bus tours and pre-conference workshops starting August 4-7, so don't miss out on our special week of celebrating the friendships and education in glass that have happened over these 20 years. After a full year on display at “Shedding Light” has been deinstalled and the individual panels have now been packaged for shipping to all of the winners of the online auction. Congratulations to all the lucky winners and keep an eye on your mailboxes in the coming week! The AGG is incredibly grateful to for her hard work, talent, and inspiration that brought this project to life to foster community among stained glass artists and serve as an amazing fundraiser for the AGG’s scholarship program. The funds raised through the online auction will support glass education for our future scholarship winners. If you are a glass artist looking to expand your skill set, the AGG’s James Whitney scholarship can help you cover the costs of glass-related workshops, tuition, and conference attendance. Scholarships are awarded each year in late winter/early spring, so start planning ahead for 2027!

The AGG welcomes Tony to talk about the apprentices and students he's had for about 40 years and how he has found it to be enriching in so many ways. He will share his experiences, describe the structure, and how one can go about doing this in their own studio. He will also emphasize the professional value it can have. In addition to the overview, he will also address issues of insurance, ethics, and other "nuts and bolts" as well as time left for questions.

Early bird registration ends on May 22! Don't hesitate to sign up for our 20th Anniversary Conference being held in the NYC/NJ area. For more information and to register, go to: https://www.americanglassguild.org/2026-nyc-nj
