"Finding Nemo"
In early September, we received two emails. One email was from Sarah seeking placement for Nemo, a stray kitten that tested positive for FIV. The second email was from Laura wanting to adopt an FIV+ kitten. Perfect!
We agreed to facilitate adoption by helping Nemo recover from what appeared to be a simple eye infection. Our plan was to temporarily house him and then transfer Nemo to his adoptive home. This isn’t our usual mission but, we just knew that those two emails were a special calling for us to help.
Unfortunately, Nemo was much more fragile than we expected. By the time he arrived at Smokey Acres on 9/15/26, he was losing a battle with severe infection. We had him seen by our veterinarian and despite antibiotics, he wasn’t recovering and developed disturbing swelling in his face.
We knew exactly where Nemo needed to go – Michigan State University (MSU) Veterinary Hospital.
Diagnostic imaging at MSU identified an old facial fracture and damage to Nemo's left eye and nasal cavity. Nemo underwent a surgical procedure to obtain tissue samples and flush debris from his sinus cavities. He remained inpatient for 4 days and returned to us on October 2nd.
We’re pleased to report that Nemo is recovering well. We hope to have Nemo in his adoptive home by the holidays.
