Have you seen the wild mountain rose blooming around the Tahoe Basin? The Washoe word for wild rose is pećumeliɁ, pronounced petz-umel-eeh. 🌸

Washoe people used pećumeliɁ shoots to craft arrows and used rose hips for medicinal tea.

Today, indigenous fire practices help clear out invasive species and encourage healthy growth of native wild roses.

You can find more information about native plants at the Washoe Tending and Gathering Garden at Tallac Historic Site.

So, where is the DáɁaw Center? You can see it from Emerald Bay Road👀

By the Y in South Lake Tahoe, a blank slate is being transformed into a center to foster connection and cultural preservation.

Thank you to the team at for installing the first of many window decals. We’re excited to see them all come together.

Though the Washoe way of life has changed drastically since the early 1800s, with the attempted removal of the basin's original peoples, Wá∙šiw (Washoe) have always adapted, preserved their culture, and lived in harmony with the elements.

DáɁaw continues to be the center of the Wá∙šiw world.

Join us in reintegrating Wá∙šiw presence in South Lake Tahoe. The DáɁaw Center will be a place that the Washoe Off-Reservation Community can truly call their own while sharing culture with the South Lake community.

The DáɁaw Center would not be possible without vision and perseverance of Lydell Wyatt.

“As a kid, when I had the privilege of visiting dáɁaw, I remember the spirit of the lake and how it transformed my being. Throughout my childhood I always looked forward to my time with the Lake and the memories made with family and friends.

As a young man, dáɁaw called me back again and blessed me with an early career working in the basin, continuing my inherited responsibility to be a steward of Tahoe. Being in the basin most days reinvigorated my excitement and initiative to be close to the dáɁawɁágaɁ and share the vision of the return. To be home indefinitely. Not just for a day, but to carry on our traditions of health, relationship, and stewardship, as my own relationship with dáɁaw was fed by being on the land and next to Lake Tahoe.

It was over 20 years ago I dreamed of establishing a community center at the lake. The first talks and attempts were in Truckee in 2013 bringing forth the idea of community cross collaboration. Although the first attempts were unsuccessful, our vision stayed strong.

After determination and preservation of the vision, we are now excited to have the DáɁaw Center. We look forward to sharing and exploring the opportunities within our communities to continue educating and stewarding for the betterment and the health of the people.”

- Lydell Wyatt, Tribal Council Member, Washoe Tribe of NV and CA
