Join us for an evening exploring once-in-a-lifetime dark sky events with Jeff Pfaller on December 17 at noon. When Jeff lost his job in the spring of 2020, he turned toward the one thing that had always grounded him: the wilderness. Over the next five years, camera in hand, he embarked on a personal quest to uncover the national parks’ secrets. Not during crowd-filled days–but during the early morning hours when these sacred, iconic places are empty. Jeff joins the Sierra Nevada Alliance to speak about his unique adventures as a dark-sky photographer and the incredible experience of witnessing America’s national parks after dark.

Ralph Bloemers will present on “Living with Fast Fires through Wildfire Gardening & Ignition Resistant Homes.”

Presentation Summary from Ralph:
Understand the dominant factors in community loss, properly define the problem, and the solutions will follow. Misapprehend the problem, pursue legacy solutions and continue to lose communities. Join us for a presentation of fast fires and the mitigations that matter to prevent conflagration. Engage in dialogue about how we support the culture change we want and need to live with fire.

Ralph's Bio:
For over two decades, Ralph Bloemers has worked with scientists, tribes, conservation groups, government agencies and communities throughout the Pacific Northwest on the conservation of forests, including burned landscapes, post fire recovery and community preparedness. He is the Executive Producer of the award-winning feature film “Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire” and is a producer for PBS Weathered on episodes focused on wildfire including Inside the LA Fire Storms. He is currently working on a series called “Fire Safe People." Ralph is a subject matter expert who has deep relationships and access across all aspects of fire, response and community preparedness.

Meet Gloria Charland, Chair of the Sierra Club Grassroots Network Toxics Team’s Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) Subteam! 🌊

Gloria and her team are on the frontlines of clean water protection—hosting in-person workshops, delivering webinars, and guiding participants through a transformative nine-month Clean Water Act class. This year, they’re equipping citizen scientists to identify harmful algal blooms and collect toxin data in real time. Even cooler? Volunteers can apply for mini subgrants to get toxin-testing kits, making hands-on science accessible—and empowering communities to monitor their own waterways.
