URGENT.

We just found out that the Burrillville Town Council is voting on a new tax treaty for the toxic Ocean State Power Plant TONIGHT at 7pm. The tax treaty sets the property tax rate for the facility, and is one of the few leverage points that the Town has to try and close the plant.

The power plant has had 32 emission violations in the past few years, and emits dangerous toxins on to our town.

Join us at the meeting tonight. If you can't make it please call the Town Council and demand that they:

* Delay the tax treaty vote until there is more time for public participation and input, and time further studies about the health impacts of the plant.

* Create a plan to close the Ocean State Power Plant with a just transition framework where the financial impacts to the workers and town are minimized and the land is healed and restored.

Please call the Town Council members now!

We believe that LS Power should pay for the environmental harm and health impacts that they have caused in our community. We also believe that LS Power should return the 365 acres of land they own around the plant to the Nipmuc Tribe.

The power plant is owned by LS Power. Over the past two years we have tried to speak to LS Power about our concerns, but they have refused to acknowledge us, even after we went to their headquarters in New York City.

Protest at TD Bank in Providence over their financing of the Line 3 pipeline.

Join us on Saturday to demand that TD Bank divests from Enbridge and the Line 3 pipeline! https://www.facebook.com/events/145128950816892/

TD is the largest investor of the Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline that Enbridge is trying to build across Anishinaabe territory in so-called Minnesota. The pipeline is currently under construction but is facing indigenous led resistance from groups such as the Giniw Collective who have been carrying out direct actions to halt construction of the project.

***

If constructed, this 1,031-mile-long pipeline will ensure that life will become unlivable; for the many Indigenous peoples there it invokes a cultural genocide. Running from Alberta, Canada to Superior, WI, the project would cross Ojibwe territory, whose federal land treaties this project directly violates, and the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabe, Dakota, Odawa, Iowa, Ponca, Omaha, Sauk, Fox, Ho Chunk, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. Not to mention, Line 3 would have a carbon equivalent of 50 coal-fired power plants and risk over 200 bodies of water. Remember, pipelines always break. Plus, the people running this pipeline “relocation” project (really, it’s an expansion project) are from the Canadian Corporation Enbridge Energy. The same group responsible for the largest inland oil spill in US history! (recent history too – just back in 2014).

We ask that you wear a mask and maintain social distancing at this demonstration. This is the first of what will be weekly demonstrations targeting the banks funding the pipeline.

URGENT: The Texas Senate will be voting this week on HB 3557 which would heavily criminalize the protesting of oil and gas infrastructure.

CALL 512-412-3587 to be connected to the office of your State Senator and urge them to OPPOSE HB 3557.

HB3557 makes it a felony to challenge eminent domain expropriation and stand up for land owner's rights. Pictured here is Eleanor Fairchild, an 80 year old Texas great grandmother, who refused to sign a contract for a pipeline easement through her home. The pipeline company filed an eminent domain claim to seize the land unilaterally, and before the case was settled they showed up unannounced and began destroying Eleanor's land.

Eleanor did what any reasonable person would do, she defended her home and stopped the destruction. The police were called and arrested Eleanor for trespassing in her own backyard.

HB 3557, a bill written by and for the pipeline industry, attempts to further criminalize those who stand against their bully tactics. The bill would enhance the charges for landowners like Eleanor to felonies that carry mandatory 2-10 year sentences.

PROVIDENCE — One of the most enduring actions in the movement to address climate change has been youth-led legal challenges.

Stop the Bayou Bridge Pipeline, which is the tail end of DAPL!

Stop the Bayou Bridge Pipeline, which is the tail end of DAPL!

A fourth aerial blockade has been set up on directly in front of ETP's tree-clearing equipment in the Atchafalaya Basin.

A water protector is sitting in a sky pod — a unique type of tree sit — to stop construction of the Bayou Bridge pipeline.

Located just off the easement near the three other ongoing tree-sits, the sky pod is tied to several trees in the path of the pipeline that are slated for destruction. Water protectors say if the trees are cut the pod will fall and the sitter’s life will be in danger. The three other existing tree-sits on site are now on day 17.

UPDATE - Police are now near the support camp for the aerial blockades warning water protectors that they must vacate the existing the tree-sits or face felonies under State Act 692 (formerly HB727), a new law that goes into effect today. The law further criminalizes dissent and makes it easier for the State to charge people with felonies for peacefully protesting.

This is a developing story, stay tuned for updates.

The Bayou Bridge Pipeline would connect with the Dakota Access Pipeline system to bring oil from North Dakota to export terminals in Louisiana. There have been over 50 direct actions that have shut down construction of the pipeline including these recent tree-sits and aerial blockades.
