Happy July 4th from Crescent Urology Institute!!

Muscle gain is just a mindset but age is “not” just number. I feel broken that the smile can’t come out, so I look above and pray!!

Always wear the Cross with pride for the Cross is what powers the heart which will power the mind.

The 🧿 is to protect me as a secondary layer but so far, nothing has pierced the Cross. And if you try to, all I will say is good luck and I will 🙏 for you. This is no ordinary Cross. This was given to me by someone very special. That it was.

Just a fun story

A non-medical friend asked me about leaving an institution and asked how we did we do it and how to start. I told my friend that is a loaded question. My friend wanted to leave for the same reasons. I gave him the redacted version because the long version will require names.

Crescent Urology Institute was born mainly out of political winds that keep changing. Politics exists no matter where you are at. 2 years into working for a system, without knowing it, I was catering to political forces instead of patients.

It was just a constant battle between two political forces and everyday you are worried will I have a job? Will they cut my salary? Which umbrella do I go under? Derogatory remarks from upper ranks.

The alternative is private practice, which is not for everyone. You can make it, but you have to be ready for some major chances. To better the odds of making it requires you need 2 or 3 partners with the same mental strength, fortitude, and resolve. You need to still have the flame of a 30-40 year old. You need to be ready to balance life the best you can. But most importantly, you need partners that have loyalty, no matter how rocky the boat.

These were the questions I had to ask myself and my proposal to my partners:

Do you want to retire with just a 401K and Journal articles, but in return your your business will be ran for you? You will have a more stable job. You don’t need to “start all over. Chances of failure is low. But you will have to keep fighting with political forces. Someone else will wield your sword, while you watch what the outcome is.

The alternative is you retire with your own building. You pay rent to yourself. You throw in a surgery center. There is way more ancillaries that you could capture. But, success is low. It will require, and I quote from Elon Musk, “It is possible for ordinary people to choose to be extraordinary.” That quote has forever burned my partners and I.

On the surface, the quote sounds simple, but read deeper and it really is the foundation of Crescent. That quote is really at the base Crescent’s way of thinking. To choose to be extraordinary, it will require you humble yourself, get help on things you don’t know, cater to the patients, and from there the calculated risks is what it Musk’s meant ordinary person can choose to be extraordinary.

I hope this story helps entrepreneurs make realistic decision and serve as a roadmap to become extraordinary.

This is one of the main reason I formed Crescent Urology Institute!!

I know a lot of my mentors expected I was going to work in an academic center and write papers.

I worked for a hospital system to understand the ins and outs of the revenue flow. And I learned a lot and predicted it. That was the most important reasons my partners came with me and did not stay at an academic center.

I know the majority of patients don’t know this. In Texas, only physicians can practice medicine, and so corporations can’t hire physicians directly. The key is directly. Why is that important? Because hospitals can be associated with a physician group or an ACO. So next time when you see a physician treating you, know that the physician is not hired directly by the hospital.

So back to the story. Physicians groups, such as Baylor and UT-Houston physicians are subsidized by the hospital. When a hospital lose such a big contract, their revenue can go into free fall, which will have a downhill effect.

Hospitals are not like the Federal government, so they can’t print money. Medicaid contracts are the biggest dollar contracts that the state award.

The only way to kind of shield from all this is to form a private group and build a name so that patients come to you because you can give superior results. That is why I told my partners, we can cover each other, but everyone needs to specialize in certain things, because you can’t be good if you don’t focus. That is why I perform all major adult and pediatric genitourinary reconstruction. Give good results and word of mouth will take care of the rest. With that being said, it is not easy to do. As physicians, few understand the business side of medicine, so working for an academic center is the better option.

My guess is that HHS is trying to reign in the cost and hence they are going to give contract to for profits because for profits companies like BCBS, United, Aetna answer to shareholders so they will running a tighter ship and cut costs.

What is the unknown is will the care be inferior and lower reimbursement that will cause physicians to not accept Medicaid.

Feel free to chime in. I am by no means an expert. These are just things I learned along the way.

Happy Monday from Crescent Urology Institute!!

When I have a failure, less than 1%, but that is still one too many.

On my trip back to Asia, I was just thinking what if we just change up where I place the sutures.
I tried it on the model and it held it out. It’s called the “DP” (Double Placement) move.

I’m a creature of habit so I do work at night. The best part is when Oliver comes in with Winston and he says: “ Dad I love you. Can Winston and I set up the air mattress so we can make sure you are safe because we know you work hard so we can be happy.” I would give up everything just to have him never grow up.

How do you even answer that? I just smile with a little tear and tell him: “Daddy’s office is your office and daddy will always make sure you sleep safe and sound.”

Happy Saturday from Crescent Urology Institute!!

I don’t talk much about my dad, but he is the one that taught me: no matter what you do in life, do it gracefully,be humble, never forget your roots, and always give back.

He never was and never will be into material things. He was more interested in setting examples of what “giving” truly means.

He graduated high school, served in the Vietnamese military, and went to trade school. He would wake up at 5 and go to work for Radio Shack and than come relieve my mom at the convenient store so she can come home to take care of my younger siblings.

I would leave college and come directly to the convenient store to work and close it out. We would close around 11 pm.

Customers would steal alcohol and all sorts of stuff. I would have to chase them. It was a tough environment, but we did what we had to do. We have been shot at and that is why I don’t worry too much about getting robbed. I have been there and you just get it handled. I’m not confrontational, but let’s just say looks can be deceiving. Someone sent me a message this Friday. By advice of the police, I will just leave it at that.

One story I remember about my dad. A customer came in and stole some bread. He walked out and my dad chased him to the front. The customer was so hungry that he told my dad “he doesn’t care anymore”. My dad told him come back in the store. My dad told him he is not calling the police. He has my dad’s words and the customer could tell my dad is an honest and honorable man by looking at my dad”s eyes.

The customer came, not knowing what to expect, but stood there. My dad told him bread alone won’t make him full. What deli meat and cheese does he want. The customer was confused. I step in and told the customer, “my dad wants to give you meat and cheese to go with your bread”. The customer was shocked and dumbfounded and picked a pound of summer sausage and around of cheese. He was in tears. My dad turned to me and said give him 2 pounds of each and give him some sodas.

That one act always stood out and is the reason why I love doing philanthropy work. My dad taught me life is finite and nobody knows what happens in the afterlife. Your faith is the only thing that can answer that. We can control time and how long we will be here, but during the time we are here, live with a purpose to better humanity, be a good example to the younger generations, and always give back.

It doesn’t matter what we can give back, because everyone’s abilities to give back is different. What matters is that you did. It may be something as simple as picking up something someone dropped or opening a door for someone.

There is just something about turning 45 that really changes my perceptive on life. I am starting to truly understand what my dad really meant. My dad doesn’t talk much. He just worked to make sure that he could give the best he could to my mom, my 5 siblings and myself.

Happy Saturday from Crescent Urology Institute

I have not had a pedicure/manicure in 2 years. I forgot how relaxing it is. Working on me now. It has been a tough year, but “victory awaits for those willing to pay the price”. No matter what life throws at me, I will also face it head on.

2024 will be my break out year. For those who go knows me, they know I can turn into beast mode fast. But I will remember to thank God. Without him, I would not be where I am.

Happy Sunday from D-Talk and Crescent Urology Institute!!

Thanks to my family, friends, and strangers the podcast has grown at an unbelievable pace. The producers sent me the numbers and his social media team has never seen something grow this fast organically in a span of 4 months. At minimum one episode gets put out every Tuesday. It’s a show not just about men’s health but psychological and urological health.

A real good friend reached out to me. Roderick Batson is an amazing friend but an even more amazing brother. We grew up in the same environment, so we can understand sometimes life don’t make sense, especially when it comes to children.

Every Christmas he always does something for under privileged children. His business really revolves around healthcare and children. That was how we met, although we are not business partners, we both have non-profits that help children in different ways. One is not better than another, it just has different missions.

I reached out to him to ask him hat he was planing this year. He is taking the wish list to 20 children, who lost their parents and this will be the first Christmas without them, who are in a group home. He brought Howdy Icecream to Katy and helped get it into HEB. Howdy is a chain that hires only high functioning people with disabilities, such as Austism and Down syndrome, so that they can have a sense of normalcy.

I know every family is probably hurting themselves and I read recently that 61% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

I know now is a tough time to ask but the story of these 20 children just really hit me.

So what I would like to do is for every amount raised, Crescent Urology Institute will match it up to $2000. In the event that the goal is not met, Crescent has already pledged that amount, but I have no doubt this can be done. Just $1 is all it takes. Fully vetted 501(c) so it’s tax deductible.

People reach out to me all the time to help raise funds, but I have to turned a lt down. They are good causes, but there is just not enough resources to fulfill all this.

These 20 children somehow tugged on my heart string. I look forward to meeting them. There is just something about this particular year’s story that I feel like this is something I was called to do.
