Rebecca Nagle, author of By the Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land, will speak on the lack of accurate representation of Indigenous people in the news, pop culture, and public discourse; how that impacts indigenous rights; and how ordinary people can push back.

Throwback to our South Haven meetup on the 11th! We loved touring the Michigan Maritime Museum and getting a ride on the Lindy Lou while enjoying some early fall colors. A huge thank you to our guide Chelsea Bailey, Senior Museum Administrator, for setting this up for us!

Join us next week at the MMA conference in East Lansing!

The Michigan Emerging Museum Professionals (MEMP) Meetup, co-sponsored by MMA and the Michigan EMPs (with support from UM-Flint History), is a relaxed and welcoming opportunity for emerging museum professionals to begin building their network within the Michigan museum community. Designed as a low-key gathering, this event provides a comfortable environment to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for the museum field. Whether you're looking to expand your professional contacts or simply want to engage in casual conversations with others in the industry, this meetup is the perfect starting point.

Attendees can enjoy snacks, making the experience even more enjoyable, and there will be door prizes to add an element of fun. It's an ideal way to ease into networking, meet new people, and build connections that can support your career journey, all in a laid-back setting. Don't miss this chance to get involved and make meaningful connections!

Join MEMP in accepting an invitation to the Land Doesn't Forget Curator Talk at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Heather Bruegl (Oneida/Stockbridge-Munsee), The Henry Ford’s curator of political and civic engagement, discusses how all the land that makes up the United States is Indigenous land. Learn about the policies that removed Indigenous Nations from their homes and pushed them onto reservations and understand modern-day movements to regain this land.

This presentation includes a Drum and Dance performance by Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. This Anishinabek dance presentation by members of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi and Pokagon Band of Potawatomi will include music, dance, and conversation. Known as the Keepers of the Fire, the Bodewewadmik (Potawatomi) people inhabited what is now southern Michigan, Wisconsin, northern Indiana, and northern Illinois.

Free admission for MEMP is limited to the first 10 RSVPs. We will meet at the Welcome Center/Main Entrance near the Giant Screen Experience on Sunday, October 12th at 12:45pm. Event begins at 1:00pm.
