Join us for the final installment of the "From Forest to Shore: Stories of Lake Michigan's Land and Lakes" series. As Kalamazoo's own Ezra Montero takes us back in time to more about the ancient history that shaped our Great Lakes state. We’ll examine the ancient Cambrian seabed, explore the massive Laurentide glacial sheet, and trace the epochs that shaped the fossils we find on our beaches today.

Tickets are free for Michigan Maritime Museum members and Kalamazoo Nature Center members. $10 for non-members.

Join us at either session today, Saturday, August 22nd and become a paleontologist! Learners will step back on the geological timeline to explore a variety of plant and animal fossils. After that, learners will create their own salt dough “fossil.”

Back by popular demand, Rock the Boat V, Stayin' Alive will feature a live performance by The 1985 , a dynamic tribute band renowned for their vibrant celebration of 1980s music and culture. Join us TONIGHT as USS LST 393 Veterans Museum Director Ryan Lancaster tells the story of USS LST 393, which lived three distinct lives. First as a WWII amphibious warship on the beaches of Normandy and across the European Theater, as a postwar working vessel on the Great Lakes, and finally as a museum in Muskegon, Michigan.

Tickets are free for Museum members and $10 for non-members.
Doors open at 6 PM.

The Michigan Maritime Museum is honored to again be a part of the annual South Haven Salute to Veterans Boat Parade and Fly-over, participating with both USCG 36460 and Friends Good Will. This year, we will also be offering free admission all day for active service members, veterans, Blue and Gold Star Mothers, and one guest. There will also be a special activity in the Jerry Mason Learning Center.
We can't wait to see everyone pack the piers tomorrow and hope that you will visit us after this amazing event!

When the Civil War is discussed in Michigan it is often as events that happened in such exotic locales as Virginia, Tennessee or Arkansas. While this is mostly true, it was not exclusively so, with subterfuge, secrecy and invasion fears popping up in places like Detroit throughout the conflict. This was especially true in September of 1864, when a group of Rebel plotters hijacked a steamer with an aim to set the shores of the Great Lakes ablaze and lay its cities in ruins. Join Jeff Po***ck tomorrow night at 6:30, as he explores the events of that dramatic raid, the personalities of those involved, and discuss how close the Great Lakes came to being a battlefield.

Join Michigan Maritime Museum Director Bailey Sisoy-Moore for the next installation of "From Forest to Shore: Stories of Lake Michigan's Land and Lakes" In this installment, Bailey will explore the rich, often gritty history of one of the Great Lakes’ most important industries! Trace the evolution of commercial fishing on Lake Michigan from Indigenous fishing traditions and early hand-set gill nets to steam-powered tugs, state regulation, and the industrialization that reshaped the trade and meet the people who pulled their livelihood from the lake and the communities that grew up around docks and nets.

Tickets are free for Michigan Maritime Museum members and Kalamazoo Nature Center members. $10 for non-members.
