I think it is wise to start tracking nonfatal drowning situations for the Great Lakes. If you feel comfortable and have experienced a nonfatal drowning or experienced a situation in the waters of the Great Lakes please share in the comments. I will follow up with a message to ask you pertinent information for data collection.

THIS IS WHY PIER JUMPING IS DANGEROUS!! I’ve never seen these rocks before. This morning while filming the waves, the low lake level revealed super sharp jagged rocks. Normally these are under water, if you jump off the north pier you’ll likely land on these! Never jump off the pier even in calm water

So interesting knowing why and how our lakes behave the way they do....the more you know helps you to better understand how you should behave in and around them.

Michigan was once located at the equator. 🌴

This map shows North America during the Devonian Period, roughly 380 million years ago — long before the Great Lakes existed.

The area that would become Michigan sat in warm, shallow tropical seas, almost right on the equator.
Instead of forests and lakes, our state was covered by giant coral reef systems and prehistoric ocean life.

Over hundreds of millions of years, the continent slowly drifted north…
until glaciers finally carved out the Great Lakes we know today.

It’s wild to think about:

Michigan went from tropical seas → to being buried under ice sheets → to the landscape we live on now.

Lake Huron Seiche ⚠️

From Fort Gratiot County Park to Grindstone City in Huron County.

We currently have a moderate seiche occuring at Fort Gratiot County Park.

From Fort Gratiot to Grindstone City you will not likely see any huge waves as the water is being pushed all the way over to Ontario in classic seiche form.

So what is a seiche?

It is a standing wave that oscillates back and forth within a confined body of water, such as a lake, harbor, or bay. So in our case the strong winds are pushing all the water over to Ontario beaches, thus causing extremely low water conditions here.

You can see in the photo the darker sediment is where the water level normally is. The seiche today is causing the less than 1 foot waves to actually crash over the sandbar. Then from the sandbar to the shore the water is basically standing still with little to significant movement.

From Kettle Point to the Bruce Peninsula can expect to see huge 12"+ waves is the place to be to see the huge waves.

Water levels should return to normal tomorrow evening.

If viewing any of the incredible waves happening during the winter storm stay away from the piers. Record breaking wave heights as the "Gales of November" show their mighty strength.

Well...our jaw just hit the floor on the new significant wave forecast for tonight....

"Tonight: northwest storm force winds to 50kt...waves 25 to 30 feet occasionally to 39 feet." This is the marine forecast from the National Weather Service for just west of Muskegon, MI on Lake Michigan. The forecast significant wave height is 28 feet tonight on Lake Superior and 24 feet high on Lake Erie! The "Gales Of November" reach peak force tonight!
