Mount Holyoke remembers Nancy Kissinger ’55, who died Aug. 20 at age 92. A history major at Mount Holyoke, Kissinger went on to build a life deeply engaged with foreign policy, public service and philanthropy. She taught history, pursued graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and worked with New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller on foreign policy and international affairs. Throughout her life, she remained engaged in civic and philanthropic work, serving organizations devoted to science, education, culture and animal welfare.

Those were Melinda French Gates' closing words as she accepted the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's Great Americans Medal.

Reflecting on Mary Lyon's vision for Mount Holyoke, Gates reminded us that when more people marginalized on the basis of gender have access to education, the future changes. Nearly 190 years later, that bold, defiant vision continues to shape leaders.
