Big weekend over here!

The momma and baby opossums shown in these photos were all released on Friday - momma came into rehab after likely being hit by a car.. it had been a while since her accident and thankfully no broken bones but she was VERY thin and sick due to a major facial injury that ended up infected badly. She clearly hadnt eaten in quite some time.. her finder thought she was a boy but upon further inspection she was definitely a female with 9 tiny little jellybean sized babies in her pouch.. she was losing weight FAST and had almost zero energy left to feed her babies. After weeks of intensive wound and pain management and a course of anyibiotics, she had healed and put on enough weight to be placed into an outdoor "pre-release" enclosure where she was spoiled rotten while she raised her babies. Every single baby survived and grew to be big enough to be released on their own, and momma made a FULL recovery. The whole crew was released last weekend but came back during the storm for cover and of course, a gourmet meal, before all leaving on their own on Friday.. :) please, please, always stop for wildlife on the side of the road.. 10 lives saved because ONE person stopped to check on this sad girl.

3 squirrels released - Charlie, Max, and Jerry.. all 3 of these babies came in eyes closed, super thin, loaded with fly strike. They were raised together and were released yesterday. The funny thing is they almost always come back for a week or so and sleep in their enclosure. I noticed little charlie(pictured) wandering the yard sort of looking lost, so i tried to lead him back to the cage when all of a sudden he grabs a huge bunch of dried leaves and climbs up a tree... i look up and there is little Jerry and Max in a huge hole in a hemlock tree - building a nest.. charlie added his leaves to the nest and climbed back down to grab more. :) so, guess those guys are good LOL. Ill be visiting that spot throughout the fall and winter and throwing them some supplemental foods for a while, im sure.

Then, we had a group of 4 more squirrels move out to pre-release. They'll likely be the last group released this fall. I have a group of 7 still on formula that MIGHT have to overwinter with us... it depends on lots of factors, so we'll see..

Still have 10 opossum babies, 9 of which will definitely be overwintering here.. that's a LOT of mouths to feed for a whole winter, and who knows what calls we will get before winter hits..

Also, THANK YOU to anyone who donated items from our amazon wishlist!! We have constant need for food, formula, p*e pads, cleaning supplies etc..and every little thing helps. You guys are amazinggggg!!

OK community - let's see how much we can knock off the rehab wishlist!! We update this often as needs arise, but we currently have 15 squirrels, 3 pigeons, and 10 opossums in care (plus some other randos lol). And boooy do they EAT! We could REALLY use your help with supplies right now! We are running low on food items like nuts, formula, etc, and could really use some of the enrichment items on here. Also, in desperate need of a power washer to make cleaning cages a little easier in between patients!

Our list is updated often and some items might not be available or out of stock - we also happily accept gently used or alternative options if you find the same or similar items on amazon for cheaper! Feel free to message us if you have something you think we might be able to use!! We absolutely could not do this without your help, so anything is appreciated. Anything we need that isnt donated is an out of pocket expense 😅

*Farm post*. Busy Sunday...Jim found an enormous hen of the woods today in the yard growing off the base of an oak tree. Like, 30 lbs. Giving a few bags to our neighbors bc theyre awesome :)

Also: "sun dried" tomatoes in the dehydrator and "Cowboy candy" with our excessive amount of jalapenos!

Then, time to feed babies of course! Lol. It never ends!!

What's YOUR favorite way to use hen of the woods?? Drop your fave recipes in the comments haha. (Im going to dry a bunch and grind em up to make my *famous* shroom seasoning salts:) )

OKAY, so i have to post about this little guy we got in today. So, i get a message from a guy who works at Shelburne Coffee Roasters this afternoon. He found this absolutely FRESH like we are talking hours old baby mouse on the sidewalk, and was willing to drive to drop it off with me, which, anyone willing to take the time to find a rehabber AND drive 30+ minutes to get a MOUSE here is an ANGEL. But thats not the best part...

We always say "Keep the baby WARM", and often we suggest a microwaved sock full of rice, stick it in your bra, use hand warmers, etc.. but this guy came up with the most creative way to keep the baby warm today..

You guys, he made a makeshift double boiler situation using two coffee cups, super hot water, and hung a sock over the rim with the mouse in it kinda hovering above the warm air. Never seen anything like it, but what a brilliant idea!

Needless to say, the mouse arrived warm and now ive got a few weeks(hopefully) of around the clock feedings in store for me😅
100% worth it. Yeah, its a mouse. Yeah, they can be considered "pests🙄", but im already feeding a bunch of babies around the clock, what's one more, and this little creature did nothing to deserve anything less.

I need a damn microscope to feed this thing LOL

Interested in learning what it takes to be a wildlife rehabber?? I took this class, it's fantastic. I passed the exam on my first try, so i can attest to how good it is! It's not a substitute for experience or learning from a mentor, but its a great start and will prep you very well for the state rehabber exam!! Highly worth the $, i promise. :)

Two new intakes over the last two days. Meet Max and Jerry :) Theyre about a week or so apart in age but soooososoo happy to be back in a cuddle puddle - warm and with full bellies

Some of our newest intakes this week. Just as we released our last spring squirrel babies, baby squirrel season 2.0 has commenced. It's literally never ending... i need a nap lol.

The first two babies are a little boy and girl siblings that were found by a Springfield police officer. Reuniting was attempted but momma never came back. These two were in decent shape other than some bug bites that are now almost completely healed up.. theyre little piggies and I expect them to do just fine :)

The little Black squirrel (Charlie) was found in Amherst on a walking trail. Reuniting was NOT attempted because he was loaded with fly strike and completely emaciated. I wasnt sure he'd make it at first so i held off on posting, but after exactly a week, he is fly and flea free and gaining weight at a steady pace. In the photo, he had just eaten half his food and decided to p*e on me. I literally changed my clothes 5 mins before i fed him. Go figure. Never 0% poop/p*e om a rehabber, ever.

The pigeon (named Pig) is a fledgling found in the middle of the road. Finder aready had him for too long to reunite and he was a little on the thin side, but his name is quite appropriate for his appetite, so I expect him to do just fine as well.

The opossum is an adult female who was caught in a trap by someone trying to catch stray cats for treatment... The finder noticed she was a little thin and had a nasty looking injury that was still bleeding, so she called us. Im so glad she ended up here because she has a BUNCH of little babies in her pouch!! The injury wasnt the worst I've seen but she has a little gash on her lip/gums that was infected and definitely prevented her from wanting to eat.. after some antibiotics, a little bit of painkillers, and some wound care she's eating like a champ. She was moved outside into our pre release enclosure thia morning so she can have some privacy. We'll atill be able to keep an eye on her and monitor her progress, plus she has the added bonus of NO threat of predators and unlimited healthy foods while her babies grow ;)

Not pictured: We got two sparrows in recently that both unfortunately didnt pull through. One had broken its leg in a snap mouse trap, and the other appeared to have mycoplasma conjunctivits. Both were just too far gone.. Bummer. Reminder to either take down ur bird feeders or bleach those and waterers at LEAST once a week! Mycoplasma is a HORRIBLE way to die for these poor birds, and it mostly affects our native finches. This was the first time Ive personally seen it in a sparrow..

Anyways, time to go back outside. It's been a LONG day already, foraging for acorns and other goodies for our "residents", cleaning and adding enrichment activities to our outdoor enclosures, etc.. we also released a bird today that came in with a broken leg a while ago, little starling that made a full recovery! All the things..
