Interested in learning what it takes to be a wildlife rehabber?? I took this class, it's fantastic. I passed the exam on my first try, so i can attest to how good it is! It's not a substitute for experience or learning from a mentor, but its a great start and will prep you very well for the state rehabber exam!! Highly worth the $, i promise. :)

Some of our newest intakes this week. Just as we released our last spring squirrel babies, baby squirrel season 2.0 has commenced. It's literally never ending... i need a nap lol.

The first two babies are a little boy and girl siblings that were found by a Springfield police officer. Reuniting was attempted but momma never came back. These two were in decent shape other than some bug bites that are now almost completely healed up.. theyre little piggies and I expect them to do just fine :)

The little Black squirrel (Charlie) was found in Amherst on a walking trail. Reuniting was NOT attempted because he was loaded with fly strike and completely emaciated. I wasnt sure he'd make it at first so i held off on posting, but after exactly a week, he is fly and flea free and gaining weight at a steady pace. In the photo, he had just eaten half his food and decided to p*e on me. I literally changed my clothes 5 mins before i fed him. Go figure. Never 0% poop/p*e om a rehabber, ever.

The pigeon (named Pig) is a fledgling found in the middle of the road. Finder aready had him for too long to reunite and he was a little on the thin side, but his name is quite appropriate for his appetite, so I expect him to do just fine as well.

The opossum is an adult female who was caught in a trap by someone trying to catch stray cats for treatment... The finder noticed she was a little thin and had a nasty looking injury that was still bleeding, so she called us. Im so glad she ended up here because she has a BUNCH of little babies in her pouch!! The injury wasnt the worst I've seen but she has a little gash on her lip/gums that was infected and definitely prevented her from wanting to eat.. after some antibiotics, a little bit of painkillers, and some wound care she's eating like a champ. She was moved outside into our pre release enclosure thia morning so she can have some privacy. We'll atill be able to keep an eye on her and monitor her progress, plus she has the added bonus of NO threat of predators and unlimited healthy foods while her babies grow ;)

Not pictured: We got two sparrows in recently that both unfortunately didnt pull through. One had broken its leg in a snap mouse trap, and the other appeared to have mycoplasma conjunctivits. Both were just too far gone.. Bummer. Reminder to either take down ur bird feeders or bleach those and waterers at LEAST once a week! Mycoplasma is a HORRIBLE way to die for these poor birds, and it mostly affects our native finches. This was the first time Ive personally seen it in a sparrow..

Anyways, time to go back outside. It's been a LONG day already, foraging for acorns and other goodies for our "residents", cleaning and adding enrichment activities to our outdoor enclosures, etc.. we also released a bird today that came in with a broken leg a while ago, little starling that made a full recovery! All the things..

"Worm" and "Slug" and some fun enrichment activities while i weeded the garden. We have an abundance of raspberries and now they know how to.. treat themselves lol.

The nice thing about having boundaries about how many animals we can handle at one time is we get to let *some* animals have more freedom than being stuck in a cage all day.. not poo-pooing other rehabbers who have higher volume, but I'm excited about their ability to climb super high up in trees and climb down, find worms and bugs to eat in the dirt in a real life scenario, and scoop berries off real plants, not just out of a bowl. I'll KNOW they're ready for release, because for a few hours every day, they get loads of real life "wilderness" training. Cool thing is they're young and in a week or two they'll have a huge pre release enclosure full of plants and climby things to continue their training - particularly the "be scared of humans" part. Luckily, they're mostly just obsessed with each other, so it shouldnt be too hard to wild em' up ;)

I wasnt planning on opening up to raccoons this year, but im grateful for the opportunity to rehab these babes and get my bearings. Stay tuned for updates!

Lunch break activity: Bobbing for apples!! These two are having the time of their LIVES right now. Theyre gonna be sad when i take it away after a few mins haha. Cant have anyone drowning on my watch!

Note: I do NOT normally take raccons, these two are the only exception right now so that i can start the process of learning their care needs (I have a beyond healthy PHOBIA of raccoons, for good reason, we are helping each other so that someday i can do more for these beautiful creatures..). ;) they'll be vaccinated, de-wormed, and absolutely spoiled rotten til release day. I have found the most beautiful oasis of a spot, away from traffic, near a secluded pond for them to be released someday. Stay tuned for more shenanigans.

These two were found wandering around the finder's yard for days without mom. They startes trying to break into their house, and Belchertown animal control ended up with them. BTW, Belchertown Animal Control are amazing. Amazing. They have helped us SO much, and helped rescue COUNTLESS wild animals.

I hate when rehabbers post snap backs but man i cannot help myself right now..

I just got my first horrendously nasty, entitled, rude call from a local (i'm sure she'll post about it but ive permanently blocked her) who said i will never measure up to other rehabbers because i wouldnt allow ther to just drop off any animal any time without getting permission to do so lol. What rehabber allows that?! She said she doesnt have time for "this texting bull****", and she was "comparing me to another rehabber who would take anything". Good for that rehabber. Honestly, sounds like that rehabber was either irresponsible, or had the time and funds to do so. I know who it was and i know she was constantly stressed out beyond words.

I have 2 kids, work full time, and it would be irresponsible of me to take on animals i cant care for properly. What if she dropped off a critical animal while i was away? Or working in the office? It dies on my front steps waiting for me to get home?!?! While trying to explain this she asked "Are you done? Because im not done with you". Bye. Goodbye. Block.

I cant just take everything willy-nilly because YOU want me to, because if i did, i wouldnt have the funds to pay for the food, formula, supplies, and vet care for the animals i already have in my care. 90% of the work i do is out of pocket expenses taken away from MY family. Rehabbers don't get paid by the state, there are no grants. This is volunteer work. I am NOT "that other rehabber", i am ME, and i have boundaries and different abilities. I'm fantastic at what I do because of this.

Anyways, screw that lady lol. Over it. I have in care right now: 9 squirrels, 10 opossums, 2 raccoons, 9 birds. And the calls keep rolling in! :) plz don't dump animals on my front step for any reason, please let me know before you come and wait til i am available to meet you here for intake

Just got home from a 3 hour stakeout in Belchertown trying to reunite an adorable but feisty baby turkey with its mom. I sat for about 30 minutes before thinking to myself "this is so dumb, its not gonna work", so i plugged *home* into GPS and grabbed the carrier.

Something told me to NOT go the way GPS told me, so i went the opposite direction, and as I rounded the corner, i got a view of a new angle of this field and THERE SHE WAS - headed straight for the direction i was just parked!!. Guess I'm just too impatient hahah.

2+ hours later of constant back and forth calling between mom and baby, and mom had clearly come as close to my giant truck as she was gonna go. She was just taunting me from like, a quarter football field away, so I decided to open up the crate and baby followed her calls and did all the trekking since mom was having NO part of ME.

I tried to get good footage, but the grass was so long and mom stayed so far away that you cant even see the baby in the video, sadly. Baby made it to mom and there were no hugs or kisses or jumping for joy, they just acted like nothing ever happened haha. So anti climatic.

Anyways, i cant believe that worked. Im so happy! I honestly can't afford the amount of insects i would need to properly care for this guy, so I'm thrilled it worked LOL. He pretty much wiped me out of mealworms in 2 days. Eek.

Thanks to the person who donated to Flora & Fauna Farm and Wildlife Rehabilitation via Venmo for helping a sad bunny, and then sending me a dunkin gift card right before i left to do this. 🥹 That iced latte kept me ALIVE and awake in my hot truck while i waited for this whole reuniting ordeal to unfold.
