What is food apartheid?
Coined by food justice advocate and organizer Karen Washington, food apartheid addresses inequalities within the food system as having roots in oppressive systems based in economics, race, geography, and faith. This term was created to end the term “food desert” an offensive outsider term that doesn’t fully acknowledge the entirety of the problem and perpetuates the stereotype that low income neighborhoods are barren and desolate. Taken from content in Karen Washington’s interview with GUERNICA (linked in bio) this guide helps outline things to think about when talking about food justice. Full text available linked in our bio!
