With heavy hearts, we’re sharing a difficult and sudden update about our Community Closet.

The Closet at 6 Open Square Way in Holyoke will be open for the final time on Thursday the 26th.

This space has meant so much to so many — a place where generosity met need, where children found essentials to grow and thrive, and where caregivers were met with dignity and care. We are deeply saddened to be closing our doors here.

We invite families to stop by Thursday. It would mean so much to see the Closet one last time filled with the community that made it special.

Due to unexpected funding challenges, AOK’s regular operations will be paused while our Board takes time to regroup and determine what the future may hold. We do not yet know what comes next, but we remain profoundly grateful for the village that built and sustained this space.

During this pause:
• AOK Connect on Facebook will remain open for connection and support.
• Our website, including Hub resource information, will stay live for now.
• Families with urgent needs may contact Board Chair Kerri Bergendahl at [email protected].

If you’ve ever visited, volunteered, donated, or received support here — thank you. This Closet has been more than shelves and clothing racks. It has been community.

You can read the full update here:

Dear AOK Community, With deep sadness, we write to share the news that AOK’s operations and all programming will be on indefinite pause effective February 27, 2026. This includes the AOK Community Closet, which will close its location at 6 Open Square Way. During this pause, the AOK Board of Direc...

We want to start of with we sincerely thank everyone who continues to support us through donations. Your generosity truly means a lot and helps us serve our community.

That said, we need to be very clear moving forward: all donated items must be clean, new or gently used and in good, usable condition. This includes books, toys and games. Recently, we’ve received items that are damaged, heavily worn, or not appropriate for redistribution, and we simply do not have the resources to sort, store, or dispose of unusable donations. This past Saturday we were quite slow and had a very large donation come in that took me until almost 6pm to sort thru. Sadly the majority was random toys with missing pieces. Also keep in mind we DO NOT accept used underwear or undergarments!!

Please understand that dropping off items that cannot be used creates additional work and expense, and takes away from our ability to help others. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable giving an item to a friend or family member, it’s likely not suitable for donation.

We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain quality, dignity, and respect for those we serve. Thank you again to everyone who donates thoughtfully and responsibly.
