We're proud to introduce our final Heart of a Hero honoree...

We're proud to recognize Captain Cuauhtemoc “Temo” Fernandez for the Heart of a Hero Award!

Captain Fernandez has proudly served in Battalion 13 for over 16 years. Over the course of his career, he has worked as a Firefighter at Fire Station 164, an Engineer at Fire Station 148, and for the past 7 years, as a Captain at Fire Station 54, serving the City of South Gate. In addition to his operational roles, Captain Fernandez has been a dedicated Advisor for the Fire Explorer Youth Program in South Gate and surrounding communities. He is deeply committed to giving back, with a particular passion for mentoring and supporting youth.

On April 11, 2025, he was recognized by Walmart in South Gate for his heroism and bravery during a fire incident in which an individual ignited items inside the store in the middle of the day. His actions exemplified courage and swift leadership under pressure. Beyond his accomplishments, Captain Fernandez brings positivity to the workplace every day!

We hope everyone is with their loved ones as we observe Memorial Day. Today and every day we remember those that have served and are no longer with us.

Our club had the privilege of participating in the Memorial Day ceremony. We had one of our Builders Club members from deliver a speech on what the holiday means to him.

Join us today (5/20 from 6pm to 9pm) for our Shakey's fundraiser in Huntington Park (2522 Florence Ave, HP). Shakey's will donate 25% to us to help support our youth programs (Key Club, K-Kids and Builders Club)! You can purchase for dine-in or takeout. Make sure a receipt is inserted in the special Kiwanis box!

National Police Week is happening now and it's a perfect time to announce the first Heart of a Hero honoree! Congratulations to Detective Antonio "Tony" Mendez from the !

Tony has been a part of the SGPD and its programs since he's been 15! Tony will be honored on May 29th at the Henry C. Gonzalez Auditorium at South Gate Park. You can purchase tickets at southgatekiwanis.org!

Join us this Wednesday for our monthly Bingo/Loteria night at the South Gate Senior Villas. The senior residents always value our visits. We always welcome volunteers looking to bring company and joy to the senior residents. The project will go from 5pm to 7pm.
