The NC PTOs & Booster Clubs Association assists parent organizations such as parent-teacher organizations and school booster clubs become legal and tax-exempt non-profit corporations for the protection of members from taxes and personal liability. We manage the annual government filings and services so parent volunteers can focus on enhancing academic goals, supporting financial goals needed to de
velop educational opportunities, supporting parent volunteerism and communication between home, school and the community. Scott Alexander was working for a school district when his triplet daughters joined their high school band. While he was performing volunteer work for the band, he was asked to be the band’s booster club’s treasurer. Being a CPA who had worked with non-profits for years, he realized that the booster club was not a legal tax-exempt organization. Members of the booster club were shocked to realize they did not have tax-exempt status and needed the expertise of a CPA to file all necessary forms to make them legal and tax-exempt. Scott Alexander volunteered hours of his time to make sure the booster club was tax-exempt, incorporated, compliant with state and federal regulations, and had accurate accounts of the organization's finances. As a tax-exempt organization, they were able to use their new status to raise money via corporate matching programs and volunteering to work for local professional sports teams, allowing the band to travel to Orlando, Florida. Realizing how complicated it was to organize the band boosters organization’s compliance issues and finances, he continued helping the booster club and through word of mouth, other parent organizations contacted him for assistance in filing the proper paperwork to incorporate and obtain tax-exemption status. He established the NC PTOs & Booster Clubs Association, LLC to ensure non-profit organizations would not fall through the cracks and lose their tax-exempt status due to the rotation of board members. He also provides a continuous connection with the parent organizations, so they can consult with him regarding sales tax, fundraising and accounting questions.
Scott D. Alexander earned his BS in Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and has been a Practicing Certified Public Accountant since 1990. He is a member of the North Carolina Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. Scott has experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors in the roles of external and internal auditor, finance director, board member, volunteer and consultant for more than 25 years.
