4Alec Foundation

4Alec Foundation Alec Kornet was a 17-year-old Junior at Brush High School, in Lyndhurst, Ohio. He was an honor roll student and in the band.

The 4Alec Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in honor of Alec Kornet, dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac arrest in youth and young adults through heart screenings, CPR/AED training, AED placement, education, and advocacy. He also played, soccer, hockey and baseball. He loved playing sports, especially representing his school. Alec was a well liked young man and could light up the roo

m with his infectious smile. He also had a great sense of humor and joked around with his peers and adults. He had a strong self esteem and you could sense that from the way he carried himself at school, playing sports and just being around people. He also showed such sportsmanship while playing a sport. He would always compliment and talk to the players on the other teams that he faced. Alec also had a gift for helping others, whether they were down and out or needed some help with school work. He had dreams of attending The Ohio State University when he graduated from high school. He had a bright future that was cut way too short and loved and lived life to the fullest. While at hockey practice on February 14, 2017, Alec complained of feeling lightheaded. He crawled off the ice to get some water. While sitting on the bench he collapsed. Alec suffered from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and passed away after he was rushed to the hospital. He never had any previous medical issues or complaints. The 4Alec Foundation was formed to spread awareness for undetected heart conditions/diseases in our youth. We feel it is an important issue that needs to be addressed and brought to light, to help save lives of our youth. It is our mission to get the word out and prevent this from happening to other children and families.

đź’™ 2025 People Saving People Award Nominee Spotlight đź’™

On Christmas morning, Edward went downstairs for a quick nap after working an overnight ER shift. Thirty minutes later, his wife heard him gasping for air. He had choked, stopped breathing, and gone into cardiac arrest.

His daughter, Elliott, didn’t hesitate.

After calling 911, Elliott pulled her father to the floor and immediately began CPR. For nearly 10 minutes, she delivered more than 1,000 compressions before first responders arrived, and she never gave up.

Edward endured an extraordinarily long, non-shockable cardiac arrest, multiple rearrests, nearly an hour on a LUCAS device, ECMO support, and 22 days in the cardiothoracic ICU. But through it all, one thing made the difference:

đź’Ą Immediate CPR.

Elliott had learned hands-only CPR through a program inspired by NFL player and Pitt alum Damar Hamlin that trained student athletes in lifesaving skills. That training became the reason her father survived.

Today, Edward is neurologically intact and calls his daughter’s actions “amazing bravery, mental and physical strength, and determination to not lose.”

👏 Thank you, Elliott, for reminding us that everyday people truly can save lives.

I posted this 9 years ago when I started forming the 4Alec Foundation. It’s been a long and exhausting 9 years. Grief of a child is the HEAVIEST burden to carry. The week Alec died, I told Scott I wanted to do something to honor him and to make sure no other family has to go through this. I am so happy for all we’ve accomplished since that day 9 years ago. Screening kids, donating AEDs, and raising awareness has been cathartic. I’d say my biggest accomplishment, besides getting up every day and living my best life, has been getting legislation passed on the state and federal level. Those laws will help to protect future kids from a preventable death. My mission has been to turn our tragedy into something positive and save lives. I know Alec would be so proud of me/us. Alec’s death was not in vain. He would’ve told me, “If anyone could do it, it would be you!” There’s still so much more to do and I won’t stop until I take my last breath.

Today, we celebrate a truly life-saving victory!

Congratulations to Rachel Moyer and the Greg Moyer Foundation on the passage of Greg Moyer’s Law in Pennsylvania: legislation that will require AEDs to be present at all PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association)-sanctioned athletic events and practices, along with emergency cardiac response plans in schools.

For more than two decades since the heartbreaking loss of Greg, Rachel has turned unimaginable grief into purpose, advocacy, and action. Through tireless determination and a love for other families, she has worked to ensure that no parent experiences the same preventable tragedy.

Rachel and the Gregory W. Moyer Defibrillator Fund have donated hundreds of AEDs to schools across Pennsylvania, helping save lives and protect young athletes throughout our communities. And today, that perseverance has become law.

This achievement is more than legislation. It is Greg’s legacy living on through every life that may now be saved. Thank you, Rachel, for all of your work! We love you!

🚨 SCA Fact to Know 🚨

5 in 10 people may survive sudden cardiac arrest if bystanders act quickly with CPR and an AED.

That’s why learning CPR and knowing where the nearest AED is can make all the difference. In a cardiac arrest, every second counts, and your response could save a life.
