At EverWild we practice slowing down, looking closer, and noticing what lies hidden 🍂

A tiny creature, a track in the mud, something tucked into a tree hollow—the kids have been finding plenty to wonder about. Often, one child notices something—like zombie ants or signs of a beaver—calls the others over, and suddenly we’re all taking a closer look! 👀

We’ve been exploring rocks, practicing compass skills, and noticing how everything is connected, with time to sketch, ask questions, and see where our curiosity takes us.

Slowing down, noticing more, and uncovering the wild beneath our feet. 🌿

Ordinary things hold possibilities we might not notice at first. 🪨 🌱

EverWild explorers spent time learning about some of humanity’s earliest tools, discovering how a stone’s shape, weight, and texture can make it useful for different jobs. Then they put their ingenuity to work, creating tools with natural materials.

Along the way, we considered what it means to work thoughtfully with what the land provides, understanding the materials around us and taking care of the places we learn from.

Slowing down, looking closer, and uncovering the possibilities! 🌎 💚

🌿 Foraging through the forest with EverWild!

The woods are full of things to discover when we slow down and take a closer look!

Our explorers spent the day learning to identify wild berries, including which are safe to eat and which to leave alone. We discovered fascinating fungi, investigated beech blight aphids, gathered acorns, and learned about mast years and the rhythms of the forest.

Along the way, we explored how plants, animals, and fungi are connected and how much the forest provides for the life within it.

Curious minds discovering a deeper understanding of the natural world around us.

What happens when one shared question opens the door to many different ways of learning? 🌿

That’s guided learning in a mixed-age community. At EverWild, our guides introduce a shared idea, offer thoughtful questions, resources, and hands-on invitations, then create room for each learner to follow their own curiosity. While exploring rocks and minerals, one child may be drawn to identifying specimens, another to recreating the rock cycle with clay, and another to examining the layers, textures, and stories held inside a single rock.

Mixed-age learning makes that experience even richer. Younger and older learners observe, collaborate, teach, encourage, and inspire one another. Each person brings different questions, knowledge, experiences, and ways of seeing, and everyone has something meaningful to contribute.

There’s no single way to enter the learning, and no single path it has to follow. One shared invitation becomes many different investigations, discoveries, and conversations unfolding together in one connected learning community. That is the value of shared, child-led learning. We grow not only through what we discover for ourselves, but through the discoveries we make possible for one another. 💚

We had such a wonderful time at our Open House! Families gathered for a bug hike, explored together, played, connected, and got a little glimpse of what learning in community looks like at EverWild.

And we had an extra fun connection to the VAHomeschoolers [un]Convention—our Adventure Tote giveaway winner joined us at Open House! 🎉 Congratulations, Ezra! We loved getting know you and your family as well as sending you all home with a tote full of goodies for your own adventures!

Thank you to everyone who came out to explore with us, to our EverWild families who helped welcome new faces, and to all the little bug hunters who happily searched under logs, peered into the grass, and followed their curiosity along the trail.

Open House gave us the perfect little taste of what’s ahead…

And now, our EverWild season begins!

Here’s to another season of muddy shoes, shared discoveries, growing friendships, and plenty of wonder. 💚

We are thrilled and incredibly honored to have received the Green Grant from Keep Virginia Beautiful! 🌿💚

This grant will help bring our Tend the Wild stewardship project to life, providing supplies and support as our EverWild families work together to care for the parks and natural spaces we love. Through hands-on service, our children will learn that enjoying nature also means protecting it—one piece of litter, one shared effort, and one wild place at a time.

Every small act of care helps keep Virginia beautiful and together, we’re nurturing a generation that doesn’t just explore the wild—they help tend it. 💚🌿

Today’s Green Grant recipient is Everwild Homeschool Cooperative in Hopewell. EverWild provides a nature-based, community-centered learning environment for homeschool families. Environmental stewardship is a core component of EverWild’s programming, with students participating in hands-on activities like litter cleanups. EverWild will use the $500 in funding to support cleanups in Hopewell, the surrounding Tri-Cities area, and Chesterfield County. We are eager to support this project that centers youth in our collective efforts to reduce and prevent litter in the Commonwealth!

🌿 Tend the Wild- Community Cleanup 🌿

Join us for a community trash and litter cleanup as part of the Great Virginia Green Up in collaboration with Keep Virginia Beautiful!

Kids will help collect litter, sort recyclable items from trash, and learn how waste impacts our local ecosystems. This park sits along the Appomattox River watershed, giving children the opportunity to actively steward the river, community spaces, and outdoor learning areas they love.

Students will count the bags of trash collected and help us enter our cleanup totals into the statewide Keep Virginia Beautiful campaign. There is even a friendly competition for groups that collect the most trash — with prizes awarded to winners! 🏆♻️

We know EverWild can lead the campaign! 💚

This weeks art class was inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt ✨

The kids explored metallic colors, patterns, symbols, layers, texture, and self-expression through paint— then created their own unique pieces outdoors in the sunshine.

One of our favorite things about process art is seeing how differently each child interprets the same inspiration 🌿🎨
