Mission Moment #9: Safety Planning
Every survivor's situation is different. Different abuse tactics. Different living arrangements. Different children, jobs, custody situations, immigration status, disabilities, resources.
That's why cookie-cutter safety advice doesn't work.
The Family Justice Center works with survivors to develop individualized safety plans that address their unique circumstances and risk factors. What does safety look like for you? What are the danger signs in your relationship? What can you do to protect yourself and your children right now, today?
Safety planning is about giving survivors information and options so they can make the best decisions for their situation. It's practical. It's personalized. And it can save lives.

Mission Moment #8: Survivor Education and Support
Knowledge is power, especially when you're trying to understand what's happening to you and what your options are.
The Family Justice Center provides education and support to help survivors understand the dynamics of abuse, recognize patterns in their relationships, learn about their legal rights, and explore resources available to them.
We offer information on protective orders, the criminal justice process, safety planning, financial empowerment, and community resources. We help survivors understand that what's happening to them has a name, that they're not alone, and that help exists.
This isn't about telling survivors what to do. It's about giving them the information they need to make their own informed decisions about their safety and their future.

One month from today, we'll be lacing up our shoes (and possibly our bacon costumes) for the 9th Annual Bacon Around the Bend 5K!
June 20th. 8am. Downtown South Bend. This is South Bend's most fun 5K for a reason:
✅ Bacon station at the halfway point
✅ Finish line party at Corby's Irish Pub
✅ Family friendly and NOT timed (the bacon is the real prize)
✅ Costumes strongly encouraged
✅ Every dollar supports survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault right here in St. Joseph County

Mission Moment #7: Financial Assistance
Leaving abuse often means leaving with nothing. No money for rent deposits or utility connections. No funds for the basics while trying to rebuild.
The Family Justice Center provides financial assistance to help survivors meet critical needs as they work toward safety and stability. Whether it's help with housing costs, transportation, or other essentials, this support can make the difference between staying in a dangerous situation and being able to leave.
These resources address immediate barriers that keep survivors trapped and help them take the first steps toward independence.

Mission Moment #6: Community Organization Training
Survivors interact with service providers across our community. Social workers. Housing advocates. Food pantry volunteers. Librarians. Every touchpoint is an opportunity to connect someone to help or miss the signs entirely.
The Family Justice Center trains community organizations on trauma-informed practices, recognizing red flags of abuse, safe referral processes, and understanding barriers survivors face when seeking help.
A community that understands domestic violence and sexual assault is a community where survivors can find safety anywhere they turn.
Bacon Around the Bend helps us expand this training work to organizations across St. Joseph County.
