Dear IU South Bend Nursing Alumni,
Have you heard? We are remodeling Parkside Hall (the former Purdue Polytechnic building near the library) to create a new simulation center for the Dwyer College of Health Sciences! The nursing program will have the whole top floor and will include a new skills lab, assessment lab, and four simulation rooms with four debrief conference rooms. The plan will more than triple our current space and provide ample storage, workspace for faculty, and a student lounge with an eat-in kitchen area. The lounge has a beautiful view of the St. Joe River through a large picture window. We expect to move in over the summer of 2024. You will all be invited to an open house to share the celebration.
IU South Bend’s simulation program started with LuAnn Woodrick implementing simulation for the BSN program. She envisioned and guided the remodeling of Northside Hall NS 467 to use the end of that space for simulation. We use that space to this day and are grateful for the firm roots of simulation LuAnn planted for future students. Taryn Liechty and Andrea Borders now lead the simulation program which has expanded to include almost every clinical course in the BSN curriculum.
We tragically lost LuAnn in a car accident, and we would love to dedicate one of the new simulation rooms to her, a lasting memory of her excellent teaching and care for every student. The dedication would be even more meaningful if funded by our very own nursing alums, families, and friends. If we pool our resources, we can do this! We need $65,000 to name a sim room. We have over 2,000 alumni all over the country and a few overseas. In honor of LuAnn, I am asking that you donate whatever you can to this project. Please visit the Dwyer Healthcare Simulation Center Construction Fund page, where you can submit your donation and indicate that you are contributing to LuAnn’s Sim room naming.
We look forward to inviting you to an open house, once the simulation center is open. We will celebrate LuAnn’s legacy together, with joy and love for all that she meant to students over the years.
Once the remodel is completed, I am happy to tour any or all of you through the new space. The IU South Bend nursing community is strong; we watch out for each other, we care for patients together, we lead this nursing community together. Together, we will educate the next generation of nurses.
