Our Juvenile Fish Study in Willapa Bay is off to a great start and our crew is hard at work! Studying these fish at this scale requires catching them efficiently and safely. Our crew utilizes a 120 foot long “seine” net.

This type of net has floats on the top and weights on the bottom so it hangs vertically in the water. We launch the seine from the beach, and proceed with the capture, species identification, and measurement before the young fish are returned to the water. Stay tuned for reports on what exciting species we have found so far!

If you have driven by our office in South Bend you may have noticed that a new, political campaign sign has been put up next to our building. Pacific CD wants to be very clear about it: we do not own the fence that the sign is adhered to, and we 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 put the sign up.

Conservation Districts are apolitical and we do not make 𝐚𝐧𝐲 endorsements of candidates running for public office.

The Pacific Conservation District has recently launched a three-year beach seining study focused on fish populations, especially juvenile salmon, throughout Willapa Bay. This first of its kind project is funded through the Washington Coast Restoration and Resiliency Initiative.

In partnership with Cramer Fish Sciences, this study will examine how different salmon species use habitats across the bay, helping to inform future conservation and restoration efforts. We're also proud to have hired three local crew members to carry out the sampling work.

Stay tuned and follow along as we share discoveries from this exciting project!

If you've spotted a 21-foot Pacific skiff with "RESEARCH" written on both sides, that's us out on the water!

Along Washington’s southwest coast, the community of North Cove has faced decades of severe shoreline erosion known as “Washaway Beach.” With cranberry farms, homes, and tribal lands at risk, local residents joined forces with groups like the Pacific Conservation District to fight back. Through efforts such as building cobble berms and restoring shoreline vegetation, the community is working together to protect both their land and the future of Washington’s cranberry industry.
