The Beacon

The Beacon Partnering together to bring transformation in everyday life (through an old bowling alley).

The Beacon is a venue where local residents, organizations, and schools can use their strengths to help others for the benefit of the greater west side community. We invite the community to use space at The Beacon to expand their own programs. This model of shared, multipurpose space encourages new partnerships, increases community access to resources, and helps us work together to transform lives on the west side of South Bend.

The Beacon is excited to host the 2025 South Bend Open – Giant Round Robin Table Tennis Tournament, today, right here on our newly renovated sports court!

As the home for niche sports like table tennis and roller derby, The Beacon is proud to open our doors to athletes, and spectators for this wonderful community event.

A huge shoutout to our tournament directors, Phil Smucker and Brad Balmer of the South Bend Table Tennis Club. Their vision, leadership, and partnership with The Beacon make high-quality events like this possible, and we’re grateful for their continued collaboration.

We’re thrilled to welcome everyone to The Beacon. Enjoy your day of competition, connection, and great energy on the new court.

Best of luck to all the players!

Today, we were honored to receive a commemorative plaque presented in person by ASBA board representative Tom Magner, recognizing The Beacon as this year’s nominated organization for the ASBA Foundation’s Facility Project. It was a special moment that truly highlighted the partnership and generosity behind this renovation.

Activities have officially resumed on the new court, and our pickleball players are already loving the refreshed look and improved playing surface! The vibrant color and crisp new basketball and pickleball lines have brought renewed energy into the space, and it’s exciting to see the community back in action.

This transformation was made possible through the ASBA Foundation’s 2025 Facility Project, after The Beacon was nominated by Ideal Coatings of Middlebury, IN. A heartfelt thank-you to Joel Troyer of Ideal Coatings for championing our project from the very beginning, not only by nominating The Beacon, but also by providing the labor that made this renovation possible. We’re equally grateful to Tom Magner, who, in addition to serving on the ASBA board, represented California Sports Flooring and generously supplied the surface paint for the project. We’re also deeply thankful to Amazon, whose support helped us reach the finish line for funding.

It’s Official, The Beacon Gym Floor Renovation is Complete!!!

We’re thrilled to share that our gym floor renovation is finished and it looks incredible! Fresh color, crisp new basketball and pickleball lines, and a renewed space ready to serve our community for years to come.

This transformation was made possible through the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) Foundation’s 2025 Facility Project, after The Beacon was nominated by Ideal Coatings of Middlebury, IN. We’re also deeply grateful to Amazon, whose support helped us reach the finish line for funding.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our Beacon partners and program participants for your patience and flexibility during project scheduling and while all programming was paused during the renovation week. Your support and understanding made this improvement possible. All programming will resume on Monday and we welcome you back to the new court!

Big progress is happening inside The Beacon gym! The first coat of floor color is down, the second coat is going on today, and the crew is masking out the new sport lines — it’s all coming together beautifully!

This renovation is made possible through the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) Foundation, which selected The Beacon Resource Center for its 2025 Facility Project. We were proudly nominated by Ideal Coatings of Middlebury, IN, and are deeply grateful for their partnership and belief in our mission.

A special thank you also goes out to Amazon, whose additional support helped us reach the finish line for project funding.

We can’t wait to unveil the finished court built through collaboration, generosity, and community spirit. Stay tuned for more updates as the transformation continues!

Gym floor renovation underway!!!

The Beacon Resource Center is proud to share that work has officially begun on our American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) 2025 Facility Project!

After completing the planning and coordination stages, ASBA and our contractor team have started on-site renovations including crack repairs and the application of the new base coat for the gym floor. Line painting and finishing will follow in the coming days.

We’re grateful for ASBA’s partnership and support in helping us create a safer, more vibrant court space for our community. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses!

South Bend is a city deeply impacted by violence. Violence comes in the forms of gun use and physical assault, systemic injustice, mental/emotional abuse or neglect, and a variety of other harmful cycles of oppression. The good news is that many organizations in our city are already working to disrupt violence - with preventative work and strategic care for our communities. Locked in Solidarity is an invitation for the broader church and South Bend community to step into this transformative work.

Here is the list of speakers and panelists for this impactful event. We hope you'll join us.

Duane Wilson, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Indiana Corridor

Dalila Huerta, Executive Director of the Restorative Justice Collaborative Hub

Rachael Coates, South Bend Alive

Linda Raven, Pro Bono Counseling Project Coordinator for Mental Health Awareness of Michiana

Lisa Kelly, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Mental Health Awareness of Michiana.

Dr. Erica Kelsey, Senior Director of Emotional Well-being and Inclusion for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northern Indiana Corridor.
