Is a school board seat the most glamorous political position? No. Is it an easy gig? Not really. But is it well-paid? Also no.

Leaders shared powerful stories about why they care about building the necessary power to create change in our community and across Indiana. We are grateful for the support from our community and local congregations who help fuel this movement and make it possible for us to continue to invest in the leadership of others.

🔥 This is what people power looks like 🔥

On Sunday, 220 clergy and community leaders packed Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church for the Safe Housing for All Public Assembly — a multiracial gathering led by Black churches and organizations through We Make Indiana.

For years, the City inspected unsafe housing, but didn’t collect fines from negligent landlords. As WMI leader Kay Farlow put it: “The big landlords know the City won’t come after them. So they don’t make repairs.”

Since Feb. 1, after WMI leaders started organizing, South Bend:
➡️ sent 209 cases to collections
➡️ pursued $1.28 MILLION in fines

That’s not a coincidence. That’s organizing at work.

At the assembly:
🟩 South Bend Mayor James Mueller did not attend, but his Chief of Staff read a letter calling safe housing a top priority
🟨 South Bend Council President Canneth Lee committed to strengthening enforcement by updating the Rental Safety Verification Program ordinance
🟪 Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow pledged to launch a task force with our leaders, issue experts, and local officials to pursue the further policy actions
⬜️ All agreed to meet with us to report on their progress within 60 days

As WMI leader Linda Arthur said: “When we work together and we are strategic, we can make change happen.”

Share this post and help this story reach more people! Every family in South Bend deserves safe, healthy housing. We’re not stopping until that’s real.
