Busy Hands of Michiana We have 82 active volunteers who gave more than 22,030 hours of their time and talent valued at more than $205,700 by the federal government.

Grants, donations and donated materials are used to create special, therapeutic and comforting items for those in need and are distributed through agencies in Michiana. Volunteers work both from home and/or come and occupy the 12 sewing stations and the knit/crochet tables. These are talented and dedicated retirees who do not want to sit at home but rather prefer to use their skills to benefit the community. Our volunteers also teach those who would like to learn.

We are open. But.... No timeline on when drywall will be installed. Consequently, much of our inventory is being stored in the church fellowship hall so the workers can have access to the walls when they do come.
Once work starts, there will likely be disruptions, but we will deal with them as they come.

Things are still topsy turvy here. We don't have a schedule for drywall installation yet. So we can't put everything back in working order.
We will open next week on a limited basis. Volunteer sewers can return. Clients picking up our products may come in, but be aware products are spread out in several areas and a bit tricky to get to. Be patient.
We Cannot take in fabric and yarn donations. The photo shows we can't access that room to be able to sort and put away donations.

The work continues... Warm air blowers and dehumidifiers are still going. Damaged drywall has been removed. A few of us are working in the sewing room and available to answer phones as needed. We just need to stay out of the way of the workers doing an amazing job and dealing with all our "stuff" in their way.
It's been a challenging week. But, this too, shall pass...

Water, water, everywhere! An overactive toilet tank poured water for 2 days before it was discovered. An amazing crew is working hard to dry things out. Warm air blower/dehumidifiers are running night and day.
As can be imagined, things are chaotic here. Once drying is done, baseboards and drywall will be removed and replaced.
Our products and supplies are fine. Everything is in bins and up off the floor. Two of our rooms were affected. The work room was not.
However, I'm asking that volunteers, clients, and donations pause while we regroup. The leadership team will need to move things out of the areas they will be doing remediation work. It's going to be awkward and difficult to find things while we play "musical chairs".
Give us 2 weeks and we'll reassess the situation. Busy Hands will be affectively closed until at least October 5th.

What a lovely surprise! Emily from Nothing Bundt Cakes stopped by with beautiful cakes for us in honor of National Non-profit Day. What a Sweet gift! We were able to share the treats with our friends at the Food Pantry.

Look what we're doing with the CDs you gave us! These playing card holders are in demand! Thanks for all the CDs.
But now we need your help collecting buttons. We need 3/4" diameter or larger. Two buttons are used to finish each card holder and larger buttons are needed. We don't need matching sets. Just odd 3/4" or bigger. Thanks for supporting us in so many ways!

Happy Birthday to Jean Stockman! She is 99 years old! While that is an amazing achievement, we also celebrate Jean's work with Busy Hands. 30 years ago, Jean, along with a few community minded women, founded Busy Hands.
Jean's dedication got us on the road to becoming the amazing nonprofit we are today. Jean now lives in Virginia, but her love for community service never waned as she continued to share her talents in her new home.
Congratulations, Jean! And thank you for being one of our founding mothers. Busy Hands salutes you!

We recently learned of the passing of a dear friend of Busy Hands. Carol Moon was a long time volunteer at Busy Hands. She was instrumental in the designing of our weighted blankets. She directed the making of the blankets for years. When her health prevented her continuing the volunteer work she loved, it was a loss for us all.
Our condolences to her family. She will be remembered and missed by all who were privileged to know her.
