Busy Hands of Michiana

Busy Hands of Michiana We have 82 active volunteers who gave more than 22,030 hours of their time and talent valued at more than $205,700 by the federal government.

Grants, donations and donated materials are used to create special, therapeutic and comforting items for those in need and are distributed through agencies in Michiana. Volunteers work both from home and/or come and occupy the 12 sewing stations and the knit/crochet tables. These are talented and dedicated retirees who do not want to sit at home but rather prefer to use their skills to benefit the community. Our volunteers also teach those who would like to learn.

Happy Birthday to Jean Stockman! She is 99 years old! While that is an amazing achievement, we also celebrate Jean's work with Busy Hands. 30 years ago, Jean, along with a few community minded women, founded Busy Hands.
Jean's dedication got us on the road to becoming the amazing nonprofit we are today. Jean now lives in Virginia, but her love for community service never waned as she continued to share her talents in her new home.
Congratulations, Jean! And thank you for being one of our founding mothers. Busy Hands salutes you!

We recently learned of the passing of a dear friend of Busy Hands. Carol Moon was a long time volunteer at Busy Hands. She was instrumental in the designing of our weighted blankets. She directed the making of the blankets for years. When her health prevented her continuing the volunteer work she loved, it was a loss for us all.
Our condolences to her family. She will be remembered and missed by all who were privileged to know her.

Thought you all might like to know how things went at the event sponsored by IUSB to help the nonprofit Malawi Matters.
Several Busy Hands volunteers cut out or sewed feminine pads. (See the previous post for more information on the project.)
275 pads were completed that day. Busy Hands took the cut out supplies and we sewed and added snaps to another 390 pads.
We were glad to be a part of this worthy project and look forward to helping out again next year.

Thursday, March 5, is the annual "Party with a Purpose" sponsored by IUSB Honors program with the nonprofit organization, "Malawi Matters". In honor of International Women's Day, students and community volunteers spend the day making feminine pads for young women in Malawi.
Without feminine products, girls miss days of school each month which may discourage them from continuing their education. These simple products make a huge difference in the lives of these young women.
Volunteers are needed to cut fabric, sew, add snaps and package. Busy Hands volunteers help at the event and also take any unfinished pads at the end of the day and finish them. Join us to make a difference! Thursday, 10:00-4:00 at the fireside room of IUSB cafeteria.
