These are the words of Marie, who was forced to flee her country after being kidnapped, tortured and imprisoned.

Every day, our clients’ experiences challenge prevailing negative narratives about refugees - narratives that completely overlook the violence and persecution that force people to leave everything they know and love behind.

In 2026, we continue our commitment to providing empowering, holistic legal aid for people forced to flee, supporting them to claim their rights and be recognised as refugees, while accessing tools for improved well-being amidst challenging circumstances.

We combine our individualised services with fighting for systemic chance - we could not do one without the other.

Last night, yet another deadly incident took place in the Aegean Sea, near Chios, when a vessel of the Coast Guard "collided" with a boat carrying people in search of safety.

At least fifteen people have died, while 25 people are at the hospital with injuries. We urge everyone to look at these people as people, not numbers. Our thoughts are with them.

In the last months, Europe has been fortifying its borders with immediate deadly consequences: there were already three deadly shipwrecks in the Eastern Aegean in January 2026.

It is not the first time that the Coast Guard seems to have a direct involvement in the deaths of people at sea. And without any accountability, it will not be the last.

Every person who dies on route to safety is a life lost at the expense of European border policies – from the lack of safe routes to the direct violence committed by border guards.

The lack of information about the asylum process has a hugely negative impact on people's ability to be recognised as refugees, as well as on their mental health.

In 2025, we have provided legal information to over 2500 people on Lesvos, equipping them with the tools and confidence needed to effectively navigate their procedure and to reduce stress and anxiety around this life changing process.

In recent months, lawyers and other human rights defenders have been targetted in public statements by the Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum, aimed at silencing and discrediting any quest for accountability, justice and human rights.

We have witnessed the targetting of lawyers representing those unjustly denied access to asylum after arriving in the south of Greece, children registered as adults and now a survivor of the Chios shipwreck. This coincides with the implementation of new laws that criminalise people who seek asylum as well as NGO workers.

Fenix denounces the dangerous and unprecedented targetting, criminalisation and intimidation of those who provide assistance to people who seek asylum.

We stand firm against the dehumanising and criminalisation of people who seek safety.

We demand respect for the fundamental right to seek asylum and urge protection of human rights defenders.

PRIDE MONTH

The asylum interview is the moment that the future of an asylum applicant is determined - whether they are recognised as refugees and can live their lives in safety, start years of struggle for legal recognition, or even be sent back to the country they fled.

But during the interview, they face challenges and injustices that make effectively and successfully bringing forward their need for international protection extremely challenging.

PRIDE IS ABOUT RIGHTS

During pride we should strive for justice, dignity, and equality for every q***r person.

This month, we’re amplifying the voices of those forced to flee, and their ongoing struggle to be heard, accepted, and live as their true selves.

At least 7 people died in today in another shipwreck off the coast of Lesvos. This avoidable loss of lives, people with hopes, dreams and plans for the a future in safety, is can be directly linked to the hostile EU border policies that prioritise fortification of borders over protection.

Our thoughts are with the survivors of the shipwreck and with the family and loved ones of those who passed away.
