❓ Did you know that for as little as $0.83 per day, you can directly support programming in Michiana?

MHAM always welcomes monthly donors! While we occasionally receive funds from grants and one-time donors, receiving gifts from dedicated monthly donors guarantees that we can make the most of our planned programming - employing staff, creating events that help awareness and access, and supporting free screening and counseling . . . the things that matter most! 🩵

“Our monthly donors are helping MHAM develop a sustainable financial foundation," says Lisa Kelly, MHAM Executive Director. "Their ongoing commitment makes a big impact that allows us to focus more on our mission.”

✨ Thank you Michiana for such insightful discourse at our Fall Summit!

We heard from Jeff Shuck (More for Many); Dr. Elizabeth Bennion (Chancellor's Professor of Political Science and Director of Community Engagement, IUSB); panelists Bonita Shrock (Oaklawn), Stephanie Murphy (SJCPL), Karla 'KJ' Mapes (Real Services), Juan Constantino (La Casa de Amistad); Anna Sawatzky (The Source); Dara Marquez (La Casa de Amistad), and Carl Hetler (City of South Bend) on the different ways that policy and funding shifts are affecting the ability of nonprofit organizations to serve folks in our community as well as steps we can take as a community to collaborate and advocate.

A note from a Summit participant: "I really enjoyed this Summit! I think it was helpful to have so many entities in a shared space to know we aren't alone and that we can lean on each other to make change in the community. We are so wrapped up in our own worlds that it's easy to forget we're all here together."

❓ Did You Know? Our Project (PBCP) was developed to address the very real need for uninsured and underinsured residents to have access to high quality licensed providers.

Short term therapy is a great service for individual, couples and families with acute problems, such as relationship issues, parenting and family stress, school or work problems, grief, and mild to moderate anxiety.

From a past PBCP client: "(Therapist) was amazing, very helpful, very knowledgeable, and just really helped me look at things in a different light. I was given techniques and things that were very useful. The therapy was extremely helpful. It gave me a release.”

🩵 Oct. 16th is Global Peer Support Celebration Day 🩵

In behavioral health, a peer typically refers to someone who has personal experience living with a mental health diagnosis and/or substance use disorder. In other words, when we face something difficult, we often turn to people who have been there before. Peer support creates spaces for individuals to feel less alone and learn from others who have faced similar challenges.

Peer supporters help by:

- Offering emotional support rooted in shared lived experience
- Sharing hope by disclosing their personal experiences and recovery journey
- Facilitating support groups
- Advocating for people navigating mental health systems
- Supporting people with the tools to advocate for themselves, including their needs and rights
- Connecting people to resources, needed services, and community
- Sharing self-help tools and education
- Supporting people to set and achieve goals

"Adding Peer Support Services is a game changer for MHAM," says Lisa Kelly, MHAM Executive Director. "Community members who access Peer Support Services know that they are not alone in their struggles. MHAM's addition of Peer Support for pregnant and postpartum women and families provides hope that things will get better"

Mental wellbeing matters/ El bienestar mental importa

Mental wellbeing is a goal everyone can share. Our goal is to promote education on a variety of mental health issues that affect our community. We hope to reduce the stigma some people feel about mental health. We will promote the use of free on line screening tools accessible thru Mental Health America http://screening.mentalhealthamerica.net/screening-tools/?ref=MHAMichiana. We also plan to promote resources available in the community as well as identify gaps and barriers that exist for many people wanting to get help.

Everyone’s well being matters. If you are suffering from a mental health issue, you are not alone!
