Camp Millhouse Camp Millhouse is a residential summer camp for children & adults with special needs. Find more information at campmillhouse.org

We offer six one-week sessions in the summer & off-season programs called the Millhouse Mingles. Camp Millhouse was founded in 1937 and held at various locations until 1940 when the late Mr. & Mrs. Charles Millhouse donated eleven acres of wooded property in Greene Township of St. Joseph County, ten miles southwest of downtown South Bend, Indiana. The camp is currently operated by Camp Millhouse Inc., a not-for-profit organization led by a volunteer Board of Directors. Camp Millhouse is an accredited camp by the American Camp Association. Camp Millhouse has grown to it’s present size of 45 acres through the generosity and nurturing support of the Board of Directors and the surrounding community. Camp Millhouse has survived solely on the support of the community, through fundraisers, other monetary donations and camper fees. We are not a United Way agency and do not receive government monies. We have been able to provide amazing experiences for our campers each and every summer thanks to the generous support of our donors.

“90 Days to 90 Years” - Day 11

Found in the South Bend Tribune dated July 14, 1946
Tribune Staff Writer, Pearl E. Hafstrom, expresses her surprise and delight at the joy she finds at Camp Millhouse watching the campers participate in many of their activities. "We do everything they do at other camps," the campers tell her. And still today, Camp Millhouse provides a traditional camp experience where everythig is adapted for each camper's individual abilities.

“90 Days to 90 Years” - Day 10

More stories from July 1946 and August 1945 - Whether the campers are performing for volunteer groups or volunteer groups are putting on the program for the campers, there is always joy at Camp. The article from July 11, 1946 talks about the musical performance put on by the campers as they "Sing Lively Tunes". The picture from August 2, 1945 is from the annual party put on by the American Legion Post #284. The caption mentions "those big smiles on their faces" as they await hot turkey sandwiches at the annual party.

“90 Days to 90 Years” - Day 9

There's no shortage of newspaper articles from the 1940s that tell tales of the joy in each camper who get to "do everything they do in other camps". That is part of the beauty of Camp Millhouse - a traditional camp experience that is tailored to meet each camper's individual ability level. ❤

“90 Days to 90 Years” - Day 8

1941 - A "hut" was built to house the nurses. The hut will have four beds, a lavatory and shower. Piecing together this history from multiple sources seems to indicate that the "hut" that was built in 1941 for nurses is now Mattes Cabin which has been the home for the camp director for over the past 55 years. Here's the current Mattes Cabin with the new front deck. It will be getting a new roof and other exterior fixes before camp next summer.

Our camp family is deeply saddened by the loss of our longtime camper and dear friend, Sarah. 💔

Sarah was a creative artist, a fierce competitor, and a generous friend. She loved her camp friends and treasured the simple, peaceful moments sitting outside her cabin, listening to the birds in her own little “happy place.” That’s how we will always picture her—surrounded by friends, finding joy in the quiet beauty of camp.

We will deeply miss Sarah’s kind heart, independent spirit, and spirited nature. She was one of a kind, and the memories, laughter, and friendship she shared with us will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Our love and prayers are with Sarah’s family and close friends, who never had to question how deeply she loved them.

Rest easy, dear friend. Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the gift of knowing you. You will always be a part of our camp family, and you will never be forgotten.

We love you, Sarah. Until we meet again. ❤️

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of a very special man who meant so much to the Camp Millhouse family. ❤️

Bill Young was the father of a former staff member, a supporter of Camp Millhouse, and a friend to so many. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity. His impact on Camp Millhouse, and all who had the privilege of knowing him, will not be forgotten. He will be dearly missed.

We send our love and prayers to his daughter, Amy, his wife, Cindy, and the entire family during this incredibly difficult time. May they find comfort in the love that surrounds them and in the many wonderful memories they will cherish forever.

Celebrate the life of William "Bill" Young Jr. and join others in sharing memories, stories, and condolences.
