More big news from the Bike Garage…

We’re teaming up with LOGAN Center to teach area youth with disabilities how to independently ride a bike. We were awarded a Safe Routes to Schools grant from Health by Design to host the first ever full iCan Bike camp in our area. We’ve hired iCanShine to provide staff and proprietary equipment to help our volunteer spotters support “bike buddies” on their journey to ride a bike of their own—with no training wheels! The MICHIANA iCAN BIKE website has all the details.

Please spread the word and support if you can! Click on the link below to make a tax-deductible credit card donation of $15 or more to iCan Bike-South Bend, IN/Michiana (no fees, we keep 100%). Contact the Camp Director to donate by check or learn about sponsorship opportunities.

Every person who likes, shares, volunteers, or donates will help us bring the joyful experience of riding a bike to some very special kids and their families!

We had another very busy night at the South Bend Bike Garage last night- so busy I never even took a single picture ... well, except after close when I took a photo of the Love Biketober Fest advertising ... 11 bikes sold, several deposits on other bikes, and 37 people checked in for repairs/service!

All bikes sold are donated ... by our amazing community! If you're cleaning your basement, garage; or have bikes you just don't ride anymore or a child's bike that's too small, we'd love to have you bring it by. If you can't bring it to us, send us a message to see if it can be picked up!

As always, we couldn't do what we do without our amazing volunteers: mechanics .. (in alpha order) Blake, Bob, Brandon, Eric (who stopped in to ask about volunteering- and got right to work!), Jim, Josh, Michael, Nicholas, Shirell, Tao, and Tom and Jack (father and son); our amazing support Patti (who holds up bike sales and support!) and (uh) Teresa (at the front desk); and special shout out to Dave and Loren who give it their all on more than just Wednesday! Can we add your name next week?

🚴☀️ SCHOOL'S OUT – RIDE SAFE, RIDE SMART! ☀️🚴

As we celebrate National E-Bike Day on May 30 and World Bicycle Day today, June 3, the Mishawaka Police Department encourages everyone to get outside and enjoy the many Mishawaka Parks, trails, sidewalks, neighborhoods, and roadways throughout our community this summer.

Whether you're riding a traditional bicycle, an e-bike, or exploring Mishawaka's beautiful Riverwalk and trail system, safety starts with understanding the laws and riding responsibly.

🚲 Know the Difference: Bicycle, E-Bike, or E-Moto?

Indiana law recognizes three classes of electric bicycles:

✅ Class 1 E-Bike
• Pedal assist only
• No throttle
• Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph

✅ Class 2 E-Bike
• Pedal assist and throttle-equipped
• Can operate without pedaling
• Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph

✅ Class 3 E-Bike
• Pedal assist only
• No throttle
• Maximum assisted speed of 28 mph

All legal e-bikes must:
✔ Have operable pedals
✔ Have a motor rated at 750 watts or less
✔ Display a manufacturer's label showing class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage

⚠️ Not Every Electric Two-Wheel Vehicle is an E-Bike

If a vehicle does not meet Indiana's legal definition of an e-bike, it may be considered a motor vehicle or motorcycle.

Many electric motorcycles (commonly called "E-Motos") can exceed 50 mph and often have motors producing several thousand watts of power. These vehicles generally require:
• Driver's license
• Registration
• Insurance

A simple rule of thumb:
👉 No pedals = likely a motorcycle
👉 Pedals + meets Indiana e-bike requirements = e-bike

🛑 Ride Responsibly & Respectfully
• Wear a helmet.
• Obey traffic signs and signals.
• Yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and trails.
• Keep speeds reasonable around others.
• Stay alert and avoid distractions.
• Use lights and reflective gear when riding at night.
• Respect other trail and roadway users.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents: Before purchasing an electric bike or electric motorcycle for your child, take time to understand Indiana law and ensure the vehicle is legal for where it will be operated.

Our goal is education, safety, and keeping everyone enjoying the outdoors responsibly this summer. Together, we can make Mishawaka streets, sidewalks, and trails safe and enjoyable for all.

🚴 Enjoy the ride.
🤝 Respect others.
⚖️ Know the law.
🛡️ Stay safe.
