Approximately 20,000 South Bend residents may lose their SNAP food benefits in November due to the federal government shutdown, as the Department of Agriculture has directed states not to issue November funding. This affects about one in five neighbors in our city.
Many will face empty cupboards, while others may have to spend what little they have on groceries—leaving less for rent, utilities, education, and healthcare.
The truth is, many of the families and individuals relying on this assistance are hardworking people, earning paychecks that simply don’t cover the rising cost of living.
While the City is not replacing federal funding at this time, our community can come together to care for one another—and that’s exactly what we plan to do.
For the Good is launching The Food Box Challenge, and we invite you to join us!
Over the past week, we’ve been compiling lists of “household favorites,” the best ingredients for food boxes tailored to each family we serve. Now, we’re looking for community members to help fill those boxes.
Get involved in one of three ways:
1. Fill a food box: Shop from our provided list and fill a food box! Comment “list” and we’ll send you the shopping list along with instructions for delivering your box to the For The Good food pantry.
2. Donate items: Pick up one or two items from the list and drop them off at the For The Good food pantry. Comment “donate” and we’ll send you a few items to choose from, along with instructions for delivering your box to the For The Good food pantry.
3. Give financially: Contribute through https://forthegoodsb.com/donate OR https://account.venmo.com/u/forthegoodsb to help cover the cost of a food box.
As November begins, a month dedicated to gratitude, it feels right that our thankfulness for what we have becomes an attitude of giving.
Join us in filling bellies and bringing stability in uneasy times.
