Here is the update from the EPA's site manager:

Hello All,

I hope you’re all doing well and had a good Thanksgiving holiday. Below is EPA’s December update for the CAG.

Enforcement: EPA continues to pursue on-going actions and activities for the site.

Remedial Action Seawall Sector: The Remedial Action activities at the site continue to move forward.

Solicitation: The USACE released the contractor solicitation for the Seawall Sector RA on November 21, 2025.

Contractor Site Visit: A site visit is scheduled for the potential RA contractors on December 8, 2025. The potential RA contractors will be on site to view the site where the RA will be performed.

Sampling: Additional sampling is scheduled for December 8, 2025 to collect samples in support of the sheet pile wall. EPA will be collecting groundwater/sediment samples within the bay and/or along the shoreline.

Hello everyone,

Please see an update below from Tanya Mitchell, the EPA site manager.

Below is a brief update. Unfortunately, we have no new updates to the last schedule that had been provided.

The court entered the consent decree on February 10, which was unopposed during the comment period.

- July 2024 - EPA entered into an agreement for USACE to contract for cleanup work
- Fall-Winter 2025 - USACE develops detailed engineering and administrative requirements for the remedial action to include in the request for proposal for cleanup work, and procures contract
- Spring-Summer 2026 - Contractor develops workplan based on USACE requirements and prepares for construction
- Late Fall 2026 - Construction mobilization and work begins

The consent decree was approved by the federal District Court on February 10. This means that NL Industries, the federal government, the state of New Jersey and Old Bridge Township have agreed how much they will pay to cover the costs of the cleanup and when they will pay; and a judge has approved the agreement.

After a brief hiatus we will be meeting again, starting tonight at 6:30 pm in the Laurence Harbor Recreation Building. EPA will not be in attendance tonight.

- All are first Tuesdays except September, November and December, which are second Tuesdays.
- All will be at the LH Rec Building except July and August, which will be at the LH First Aid Squad.

2025 TOPICS & GOALS

We have the following primary goals to address this year:
1. Continue 2-way communication with the EPA regarding the cleanup.
2. Aid EPA in informing the public of the cleanup.
3. Make recommendations to NOAA and the other Natural Resources Stakeholders on how to spend the money that is set aside for natural resource remediation.

Hello friends,

The next meeting of the Raritan Bay Slag Community Advisory Group (CAG) will beTuesday night, October 8, 6:30 pm at the Laurence Harbor Rec Center.

Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be present to review the recent Consent Decree. Representatives from NOAA will also be present to address questions about the Natural Resource Trustees.

Do not worry if you are not able to attend the meeting: the EPA will hold a public hearing October 17 in Old Bridge in a larger facility.
