The Sound Beach Civic A Tapestry of the American Experiment— an event that reflects on our national identity, history, and values—is only two weeks away.

DID YOU KNOW:

• That George Washington voluntarily declined to seek re-election in order to establish a peaceful transition of power as well as set a two-term precedent?
• That at a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration commemorating the signing of the Declaration, Frederick Douglass asked
“What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” . . .
And answered saying:
“This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn [but] . . . Notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country?
• That at his farewell speech to the nation President Ronald Regan said:
“If we forget what we did, we won't know who we are. I'm warning of an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit.”

Join us on June 14 to remember our country’s evolving identity, values, and democratic spirit thru the words and songs that define this journey.

Two Lights for Tomorrow is a nationwide initiative to commence the celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States of America. The famous ride of Paul Revere occurred overnight on April 18 – 19, 1775. Two Lights for Tomorrow commemorates that famous ride and uses the imagery of that shining light today as a uniting call to action for our citizens to celebrate and serve.

So we urge everyone to place two lights in their window on the 18th as well as join the Civic for a day of service and help get the adopt-a-spot ready for spring planting as well as donate food for Long Island Lending a Helping Hand. See the food list.
