Three years and 2 months after it was shuttered, the Sound Beach Post Office is open.

The benches in front were in disrepair and needed to be replaced, and the postmaster asked the Civic if we could get it done.

Initially we considered trying to get grant money, but knowing what a long process that can be, we decided to do it ourselves.

Civic board member Leon Adler looked at them to see if they could be repaired—and he said NO, they need to be replaced. And, as he often does, he took it upon himself to do the work.

So here are photos of the new benches, Leon sitting on one of the new benches, Leon working, and finally photos of the old benches.

This September marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. In honor of those we lost — and in tribute to her aunt, Marcia Hoffman, who died that day — Sound Beach resident and Civic member Brooke Moos has organized the Sound Beach Veterans Drive, a community donation drive benefiting the Northport VA Medical Center.

She is collecting new, unopened personal care items, clothing, and gift cards (Uber, grocery, Target/Amazon) from August 18 through September 9, 2026. She will personally deliver everything to the Northport VA on September 11. Donation boxes are set up at the Sound Beach Fire Department, Firehouse Restaurant, Handy Pantry Sound Beach, and Comsewogue Public Library.
