Sierra Nevada Rewilding

Sierra Nevada Rewilding Local ecology, tending the wild, foraging, wild fire, indigenous & historical perspectives. Bringing ancient wisdom to modern life.

This page is the beginning of a dream I have had for a long time. We will provide information and education on the local ecology and it's relationship to humankind, including the role of fire, the historical, indigenous perspectives of tending the wild, modern sustainable foraging, and much more. Re balancing our relationship with the natural world is the only solution to heal humanity and the planet, which are are both at the brink of collapse, as we are inexplicably intertwined.

I never paid attention to which trees I stood near until a neurologist told me their chemical signatures are as different as wine varietals—and your body's reading them whether you notice or not.

Phytoncides aren't just "tree smell." They're antimicrobial compounds trees release to protect themselves from insects and decay. When you breathe them in, your NK cells—natural killer cells that patrol for threats—increase activity by up to 50% within hours. But here's what stopped me cold: different trees produce different phytoncide profiles, and they affect your nervous system in measurably different ways.

Oak and cedar release steady, grounding compounds. People near them show slower heart rate variability—the pattern your nervous system makes when it feels safe. Pine and fir produce sharper, more volatile terpenes that correlate with increased alertness and cortisol dipping back to baseline faster after stress. It's why walking through a pine forest feels clarifying while sitting under an oak feels like exhaling tension you didn't know you were holding.

Your body's already choosing. That tree you detour toward on your walk, the one you lean against when you stop to catch your breath—that's not random. You're following a chemical conversation happening below conscious thought.

I've started noticing which trees pull me on different days. After bad sleep, I drift toward the pines near the parking lot. After tense meetings, straight to the massive red oak by the bench. My body knew before my brain caught up.

What tree are you drawn to when you need to reset? [Y2AIZ]
