Sonoma Garden Park

Sonoma Garden Park Sonoma Garden Park is a 6.1 acre working farm, center of education, and public park. We are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

A project of the Sonoma Ecology Center, Sonoma Garden Park provides a beautiful, natural environment with educational opportunities for both adults and children. The property was a gift from Pauline Bond, schoolteacher and a gardener, to the City of Sonoma. Sonoma Ecology Center has developed the property and maintains it to promote sustainable garden & farming practices in the community.

Welcome back to Building Biodiversity, our series where we give you a sneak peek into the pollinator-friendly plants that are blooming in Sonoma Garden Park's Native Plant Nursery, bringing beauty and biodiversity to gardens and wildlands across the Valley and beyond.

This week's spotlight is the Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa)!

The Western Columbine is a striking native perennial featuring dangling red and yellow spurred flowers. It benefits local ecosystems by providing vital nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies, offering ornamental beauty in shady garden spots, and supporting native wildlife.

Calling all fermentation fanatics! Every year we host a (friendly) "Culinary Competition" at the Harvest Festival, and this time we’ve decided to feature a Sonoma Garden Park favorite—quick pickles!

Contestants can choose from two categories:

~ Fresh Refrigerator Kept Sweet Pickles—cucumbers are the only required ingredient.
~ Fresh Refrigerator Kept Savory Pickles—any fruit or vegetables pickled in a brine with herbs, spices, vinegar...whatever your secret recipe may be!

Welcome back to Building Biodiversity, our series where we give you a sneak peek into the pollinator-friendly plants that are blooming in Sonoma Garden Park's Native Plant Nursery, bringing beauty and biodiversity to gardens and wildlands across the Valley and beyond.

This week's spotlight is California Goldenrod (Solidago velutina ssp. Californica)!

A member of the sunflower family, this California native lights up open woodlands, grasslands, and streambanks with bright yellow flower clusters that bloom late summer into fall. Tough and adaptable, it spreads readily by rhizome and provides a crucial nectar source for native bees and butterflies just as other blooms are fading.

Just like the garden itself, each person who shows up brings something different: a skill, a bit of energy, a willingness to get their hands dirty. And when all those different roles come together, the result is what you see growing around you—a flourishing, beautiful example of biodiversity, built by many hands working side by side.

Want to be part of it? Volunteers play a vital role in building and maintaining Sonoma Garden Park. Join a community of warm and welcoming volunteers while growing your permaculture knowledge!

We have drop-in volunteer times throughout the week, and so many different roles to fill—whether you like working alongside other gardeners or the solitude of tending native seedlings. Every third Friday we have a Volunteer Workday & Social, 9:00 am–12:00 pm. Come meet fellow volunteers and learn how you can plug into this amazing community!

This May, we said goodbye to Steve Carara, who for 15 years was the guiding hand and heart of Sonoma Garden Park. Steve's dedication touched thousands of visitors, students, and volunteers who walked through the garden that flourished under his stewardship.

We invite you to read the tribute to Steve, Guardian of Sonoma Garden Park, written by Sonoma Ecology Center's Education Manager Tony Passantino. Having worked alongside Steve for 13 of his 15 years at Sonoma Garden Park, Tony is one of the many, many people who were touched by Steve's leadership. "It is hard to imagine Sonoma Garden Park without Steve moving through it," Tony writes. "But his fingerprints are everywhere you look. They are in the soil, the barn, the orchard, the chicken coop, and the memories of all of us who walked and talked with him."

Come shop native plants at Sonoma Garden Park this August! The Native Plant Nursery is open Friday August 7, 14, 21, & 28 from 12:00-3:00 pm.

The nursery propagates thousands of plants every year, which Sonoma Ecology Center's Restoration Team uses in habitat restoration, creeks, and open spaces that they steward in Sonoma Valley and beyond. We grow extra plants so you can help build biodiversity and support our local pollinators in your own home garden!

This week's Building Diversity spotlight is White Sage (Salvia apiana)!

A member of the mint family, this Southern California native lights up dry, sunny slopes with silvery, aromatic foliage and tall flower stalks that bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies can't resist. Extremely drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established, it thrives in poor, well-drained soil.
