Building Bridges...
One of the goals of any sister-city relationship is to make new friends whose culture, religion, language, customs, food and dress may be quite different then our own. When cultures collide, building bridges between them allows for friendships to flourish, as friends recognize and pursue the qualities that make us all human.
In April of 2008, Abderhman Salaheldin, Consul General of Egypt in San Francisco, visited Sonoma and proposed a sister-city relationship with the southern city of Aswan. By June, Sonoma’s City Council unanimously voted to forge a relationship with Aswan. Shortly thereafter, Sherri Ferris and Carol Blackman founded the Sonoma-Aswan Committee (SAC).
The primary mission of the SAC is to promote goodwill between our two cities by engaging in humanitarian and youth programs in Aswan. Over the past ten years, SAC has maintained the Sister Cities International ideal of promtoting peace and interacting with our respective sister-cities “one individual, one community at a time.”
The Sonoma-Aswan Sister City Committee operates under the Sonoma Sister Cities Association (SSCA), a registeed nonprofit organization (SSCA federal tax identification #68-0108056).
