“When they go through something that seems horrific and impossible to live with, it’s not the end of the story, the story looks pretty grim at times, but I’ve just seen so many examples. There’s a pathway through it that leads to things that are just surprising...I guess that’s the thing I like people to realize so that they don’t give up on themselves.” - Dr. Richard Tedeschi, Co-founder of PTG and Executive Director of the Boulder Crest Institute for Posttraumatic Growth

A group of friends who worked in finance at the World Trade Center changed their lives after the attacks, something psychologists call post-traumatic growth.

Don’t struggle alone.

We are wired for connection. Yet when we’re struggling most, our instinct is often to pull away — out of fear, anger, shame, or the belief that what we’re carrying will burden someone else. But isolation doesn’t lighten the weight. It often makes it heavier.

Do something different. Reach out, even when it scares you. Breathe before reacting so you can lean into connection instead of away from it.

Give people the chance to remind you that you matter and that you're not alone. Most of them would rather hear your pain, sit with you in the struggle, and help carry the weight than lose the opportunity to be there for you.

Change starts with connection. Don’t wait until the struggle becomes a crisis to reach for it.

Research shows PTG may act as a protective factor against su***de. Dr. Tedeschi and Dr. Greene unpack the three areas where leading theories of suicidality converge — psychological pain, hopelessness, and loss of connection — and explore how the five phases of Posttraumatic Growth can work directly against each of them: deeper relationships, new possibilities, personal strength, appreciation for life, and spiritual and existential change.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or needs immediate support, call or text the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day — a day to confront the urgency of this crisis, but also to ask what more we can do to prevent it.

What can Posttraumatic Growth contribute to the conversation about su***de prevention?

For Boulder Crest Foundation CEO Josh Goldberg, that question is deeply personal.

There was a time when he couldn’t see a way forward and came close to making a decision he could never take back. What helped him begin to see something different were people, ideas, and the recognition that how things were wasn’t how they had to remain — and that his best days could still be ahead of him.

Today, Josh shares his story and why he believes hope and the possibility of growth matter.

His story is part of a broader collection on the Boulder Crest YouTube channel exploring su***de prevention through the lens of PTG — including the emerging roles of Connection, Regulation, and Hope.

Watch. Learn. Share. And help us expand the conversation about what su***de prevention can look like.
