GFWC Somis Thursday Club

GFWC Somis Thursday Club We welcome visitors and new members. Join us to make friends, do good and have fun! We meet the 2nd Thursday of the month.

The Somis Thursday Club is a social & service organization associated with the Tierra Adorada District #14 of the California Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The Somis Thursday Club has served the Somis and greater Camarillo, CA area for over one hundred years. We provide scholarships to local graduating seniors to help further their education. The club also

pursues a number of other activities to promote education, culture and civic welfare. Our meetings provide members with opportunities to learn, socialize and be involved in service activities. Our historic clubhouse is used for our meetings and programs, and also rented to organizations with similar aims.

The Somis Thursday Club met yesterday, 3/13, and enjoyed a program presented by AAUW Women In History project. Portrayed were Elenor Rosevelt, the first Latina astronaut, Ellen Ochoa, and Jane Goodall. Tables were decorated with pots of succulents, studded with quotes from women in history. Many thanks to members Leslie Walsh, for her table scapes and the delicious Irish stews, coleslaw and breads, and to Colleen Robertson for fabulous leek/potato soup. We were honored to have several visitors, who we hope will join us as we make our community better through various service projects. Our next meeting will be held on 4/9, 11:30 am, at our clubhouse 5380 Bell Street, Somis.

Somis Thursday Club's Pajama Party reciprocity held yesterday was a huge success, thanks to the many members who helped make it so. Our request for donations to field workers who live at the Somis Ranch Apartments resulted in a big table full of food and other necessities which filled two cars to the limits when delivery was made.
Our next general meeting will be held on March 12, when our program will be presented by members from the AAUW, representing Women in History. Come join us for fellowship, service and fun. Our meetings are held in our clubhouse at 5380 Bell Street in Somis, beginning at 11:30. First time attendees are treated to lunch.

Turkey, homemade cranberry sauce and all the rest of the trimmings will be the featured lunch at the November meeting of the Somis Thursday Club on 11/13. Meeting will start at 11:30, with lunch being served at noon.
Our program will be an exploration of Gratitude. We will have an art project and an opportunity to write a note of gratitude too.
To prepare, please bring a 3x5 card with a short statement or aphorism about the subject.
Here’s an example from Oprah: “Be grateful for what you have: you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough”
Or here is one from the Greek philosopher Epicurus: “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not: Remember that what you have now was once among the things you only hoped for."
There are lots of others, if you just look. See what else you can find or create about the subject, and be ready to share.
We will make a collage of all this wisdom.
Come visit us and enjoy the fun, fellowship and wonderful feelings you get from participating in service projects to help our surrounding community. First time attendees are our guests for lunch.

At the November meeting of the Somis Thursday Club, our program was presented by Audrey Walzer, owner of Camarillo-Somis Yoga & Mindfulness Studio. Audrey teaches Functional Yoga for seniors. Different than the stretchy poses we see in media, she emphasizes simple movements and breath work for the strength, mobility and calm to help us keep doing all the activities we love as we age. Members enjoyed the gentle stretching and breathing movements and many displayed interest in signing up for more of Audrey's Gentle Yoga for Seniors class.
A delicious lunch was provided by members Terri Tulberg and Doris Thompson followed by a short business meeting. Plans for fund raising through a sale of crafts and baked goods at our next District meeting were discussed, as well as a fun, unusual Reciprocity to be held in February at our clubhouse. Stay tuned for more information about that!
Our next meeting will be held on November 13th at 11:30 with the very appropriate theme of "Gratitude". Come join us for fun, fellowship and to join in service projects that benefit our surrounding communities. First time guests will be treated to lunch. Contact Patti DiZazzo at [email protected] or call (805)469-5059.

The Somis Thursday Club met on September 11, 2025 with renewed spirit and happiness to be together again after our summer hiatus. We inducted two new members, Amy Ciccone and Penny Alexander (see photo below with membership chairman, Patti DiZazzo). We thank our program presenters from the Camarillo Health Care District - Blair Barker and Mikaela Northrup - for giving our members an overview (and handouts) of all the fabulous programs that are available at no or reduced costs - everything from gentle yoga to walking clubs to Balance and Fall Prevention. We were very happy to welcome back a previous club member, Carol Lamb (we hope she will be able to rejoin our group), and she brought a friend with her, Nancy Bien.
Our next meeting will be held on October 9 at our clubhouse at 5380 Bell Street in Somis. Audrey Walzer from Camarillo-Somis Yoga & Mindfulness will present our program. We will turn our schedule around for this meeting, when we will have the program presentation first (11:30), then lunch at noon and a short business meeting after lunch.
Come join us to make new friends, have fun and do good works within our community. First timers will be treated to lunch. For reservations contact [email protected] or call (805)469-5059.
