PUBLIC NOTICE: PRESCRIBED BURN SCHEDULED

The Ventura County Prescribed Burn Association (VCPBA) plans to conduct a prescribed burn at Steelhead Preserve (OVLC) on June 24 & 26, 2026.

Prescribed Burn Associations (PBAs) are community based, mutual aid networks that help private landowners put “good fire” back on the land. PBAs across California have increased the capacity for communities to do more prescribed fire for ecological, cultural, and safety reasons.

Last week, the Ventura County Prescribed Burn Association (VCPBA) hosted a CA-219 Firing Operations course for advanced firefighters and prescribed fire practitioners. Between June 1–3, 2026, 42 acres were treated with prescribed fire across two properties in Ojai Valley. These burns were done to provide training opportunities for firefighters, to prevent seed-set of non-native invasive yellow star thistle while in bud/flower, and to increase future germination for native forbs that have already gone to seed (i.e. Lupine, redmaids, and others).

These broadcast burns were a huge collaborative success! These burns were done in conjunction with VCRCD, the Happy Valley Foundation , The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy , the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District , the Mountains Recreations and Conservation Authority Fire Department (MRCA FD) mrcs.ca.gov, Bell Canyon FD , Chumash FD , Ventura City FD , Beverly Hills FD , Ventura County FD , CalFire , and VCPBA vcrcd.org/vcpba, SLO PBA calpba.org/slo-pba, and LA PBA calpba.org/la-pba Volunteers.

Last week, we used a simple but effective way to combat ever-recurring weedy grasses— cutting grasses short🌿, installing cardboard 📦, and covering with wood chips🪵

This sheet-mulching technique will smother the plants underneath while the cardboard slowly decomposes back into the soil.

It takes a team to secure a tree cage! 💪

Two weeks ago, VCRCD staff added 13 native sapling trees at our Harbor Blvd site to provide future wind protection and canopy roosting sites for monarchs as replacements for the old eucalyptus that die and fall down. In the second photo, a black phoebe was trying out a new perch provided by the tree protection fence!
