The BFTA will oversee the establishment of the Bigfoot Trail route and work to secure funds to maintain parts of this trail that need upkeep. The BFTA will also create a community committed to construct, promote, and protect in perpetuity the Bigfoot Trail. The Bigfoot Trail is a long distance hiking trail through the Klamath Mountains of northwest California and, briefly, southwest Oregon. The tr

ail begins in the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness and ends near Redwood National Park at the Pacific Ocean near Crescent City, CA. The establishment of this route will lead to a deeper understanding and awareness for this little known corner of California—in essence promoting greater future sustainability for this botanical wonderland. The major focus along the trail is conifer diversity, passing 32 species along the 360 miles. Also, en route, one dissects six wilderness areas, one National Park, and one State Park.

Meet the First Bigfoot Trail Alliance Seasonal Trail Crew!

This summer marks a major milestone for the Bigfoot Trail Alliance: the launch of our first-ever seasonal trail crew.

From the Yolla Bollys to the Marble Mountains, Trinity Alps, and Siskiyous, this team will spend the summer clearing trails, removing downed trees, rebuilding tread, and helping keep the Klamath Mountains accessible for future generations.

🌲 Ashley O’Bar – trail builder, sawyer, and wildfire response veteran
🌲 Sarah Brandt – long-distance hiker with 7,000+ trail miles
🌲 Jack Christy – Klamath Mountains ecologist and graduate researcher
🌲 Sebastian Evans – forester, former Hotshot, and wilderness leader
🌲 Dallas Morgan – forester, biologist, and 10,000-mile long-distance hiker

We’re excited to see what this talented crew accomplishes this season. Please join us in welcoming them to the trail!

🎙️ New Episode of Bigfoot Trail Tales

The Klamath Mountain Workforce Training Network is helping connect young people across Northwest California to meaningful experiences in trail stewardship, ecological restoration, outdoor leadership, and conservation careers.

In this episode of Bigfoot Trail Tales, you'll hear directly from youth participants and partners working to build skills, confidence, and connection through hands-on stewardship in the Klamath Mountains.

This work is made possible through support from the SH Cowell Foundation, Humboldt Area Foundation Klamath River Fund, and Redding Rancheria, along with an incredible collaborative that includes Ascend Wilderness Experience, Scott River Watershed Council, Salmon River Restoration Council, Trinity Together: Cradle to Career Partnership, The Watershed Research and Training Center, Trinity County RCD, regional Tribal governments, youth leaders, and the Bigfoot Trail Alliance.

We believe the future of stewardship starts by investing in young people today.

This Memorial Day Weekend, an incredible group of youth (18!) and mentors (6) came together at the edge of the Marble Mountain Wilderness to give back to the land through stewardship, hard work, and community.

Over the course of the trip, crews worked roughly 7.5 miles of trails, removed around 20 downed trees, brushed overgrown sections, and repaired about a mile of tread — helping keep these wild landscapes accessible for future hikers and stewards.

But the weekend was about much more than trail work.

Young people learned wilderness skills, trail stewardship, teamwork, Leave No Trace ethics, and what it means to care for public lands. Evenings were spent sharing meals, stories, laughter, and campfire conversations beneath the stars.

Programs like this remind us that stewardship is not just about maintaining trails — it is about building the next generation of people who feel connected to these mountains and responsible for their future.

Huge thanks to all the volunteers, mentors, partners, and especially our amazing youth participants who showed up ready to work, learn, and grow together.

The trail is better today because of your effort.

It takes a village to make stewardship happen and we are so grateful for our supporters. Redding Rancheria Community Fund at Community Foundation of the North State, the Klamath River Fund at Humboldt Area Foundation / Wild Rivers Community Foundation, U.S. Forest Service - Six Rivers National Forest, business sponsors like Pacific Outfitters, partners like Ascend Wilderness Experience and Scott River Watershed Council, and Bigfoot Trail Alliance members like YOU provided critical funding for travel, tools, meals, participant stipends, training, insurance, and field mentorship. Thank you!

Last weekend, the Klamath Mountains Workforce Training Network (KMWTN) completed its final workshop of the 2025-2026 field season in beautiful Forks of Salmon, CA.
This action-packed "Plants, Fire, & Fisheries" workshop was hosted by KMWTN partners Salmon River Restoration Council & the Karuk Tribe Department of Natural Resources / Pikyav Field Institute.
Participants worked as teams to gather data, assess vegetation types, monitor salmonid populations, & learn the real-time restoration skills necessary to leave this special place better than they found it.
Generous support from the Klamath River Fund at Humboldt Area Foundation / Wild Rivers Community Foundation, S.H. Cowell Foundation, & the Redding Rancheria Community Fund at the Community Foundation of the North State removed barriers to participation, covering travel expenses & providing facilitators & participants with stipends, honoraria, & nourishing meals (prepared by lowkey legend Cal-Salmon Catering ).
The KMWTN is an innovative collaborative drawing on the expertise of Tribal, education, & NGO partners (including Ascend Wilderness Experience, Bigfoot Trail Alliance, Salmon River Restoration Council, Scott River Watershed Council, The Watershed Research and Training Center, & Trinity County RCD), coordinating with workforce pathway programs like SiskiyouWorks & Trinity Together: Cradle to Career Partnership to ensure graduates have the tools & mentorship to pursue meaningful careers in conservation & natural resource management.

There are moments when community gathers with purpose—when art, story, and place come together in a single evening.

We’re honored to share that the Bigfoot Trail Alliance has been selected as the raffle donation recipient for this upcoming event.

Each raffle ticket is more than a chance to win something—it’s a way of giving back to the landscapes that hold us. Proceeds will support our work maintaining and restoring the Bigfoot Trail, a 360-mile pathway through the wild heart of the Klamath Mountains.

If you’re nearby, we’d love to see you there. Come for the gathering, stay for the stories, and take part in the raffle that helps keep this trail alive.

There are places where the trail fades each winter—buried under storms, bent beneath the weight of time. And then, each spring, people return.

In early April, crews gathered deep in the Marble Mountains along Wooley Creek—hands on tools, boots in the dirt—working to reopen a passage that connects people to something larger than themselves. Over five days, more than 6.5 miles of trail were cleared and nearly 75 fallen trees removed, each cut a quiet act of care.

Fir and madrone lay across the path. Root balls lifted whole sections of tread. The work was slow, deliberate, and shared.

This is what stewardship looks like: not a single moment, but a rhythm—returning year after year, restoring a line through the wild so others can follow it.

The trail is open again, for now.

Come walk it.
And if you feel it, come help shape what comes next.

Volunteer trip sign-ups are now open for the Bigfoot Trail Alliance!

Each year our crews head into the Klamath Mountains to clear windfall, restore trail tread, and help keep the 360-mile Bigfoot Trail open. It’s hard work, beautiful country, and somewhere between the first log and the evening campfire, lifelong friendships tend to form.

Who’s ready to get their hands dirty?

We charge a small fee to help cover food and trip logistics. If cost is a barrier, please reach out — we’re happy to offer free spots when needed.
