Based in Somerville, MA, the League of Urban Canners (LUrC) is an urban food production cooperative where members of the community share responsibility for creating low-cost healthy food using a sustainable economic model. Each year, thousands of pounds of fruit goes to waste in our city because most property owners do not have the time, equipment or expertis

e to harvest the fruit growing in their yards. LUrC contracts with owners to allow coop members to farm, harvest and process fruit grown on their property. Each member receives a share of the processed fruit based on their contribution of work. Owners also receive shares of fruit in exchange for allowing the coop to harvest. There is no fee to join LUrC and it is open to all members of the community. During the 2012 season LurC harvested over 4000 pounds of fruit!

Foraging might be illegal in New York City's public spaces, but not on its waterways. This public floating food forest "relies on the principle that commons can be sustainably managed where people know each other, trust each other, and work together in caring for a place. There is no limit in foraging on Swale. In fact when Swale launched, and there was not much ripe to pick, on some days we found more people bringing plants than taking them. ... In 2016, Swale hosted over 60,000 visitors and 100 public programs."

How do you get a pre-season "harvest"? Thanks go to pruners!
Here's a more basic recipe for tkemali, the Georgian sour plum sauce that uses the "harvest" from unripe thinned fruit - and how this Brooklyn cooperative farming project came to have so much fruit to thin.

Since our fruit trees got pruned this year, we’re seeing an impressive amount of fruit, way more than we’ve ever had, presenting us with a new problem — our pluot tree had branches so heavy with fr…

You can thin out a productive tree to get better quality fruit later - and still use what you’ve culled.

Is there lead in our urban fruit? Prof. Dan Brabander and his research team from Wellesley College have proposed an informal gathering to share their current research results from this year’s work: Cherries will be one highlight, and their new processing technique for the study that they’ve developed - from their ongoing lead study started in the summer of 2014!

Please join us, all are welcome:
Thursday My 11 at 7:30p
Clover Food Lab – Kendall Square
355 Main Street, Cambridge

We will be either inside at the large wooden table in Clover, or in the seating area atrium, next to the MIT Coop and Google entrance.
Looking forward to the discussion!

Wellesley college, Prof. Dan Brabander and his research students will present their current results of the on-going citizen-science research study on Pb in local fruits, established in 2014. Do you have too much chunky applesauce in your cupboards? Amy recommends blending the applesauce (or any fruit sauce) to a smooth consistency. I hear it goes well with pork tenderloin :)
