Preeclampsia is a serious health problem for pregnant people around the world. In the U.S., it affects about 1 in every 25 pregnancies. While most people who have preeclampsia have healthy babies, this condition can cause serious problems. People who have preeclampsia are more likely to deliver their baby too early (before 37 weeks of pregnancy).

If you’re at high risk for preeclampsia, your provider recommends low dose aspirin. Talk to your doctor about your risk and whether low dose aspirin is right for you.

💬 Comment "reduce risk" and we'll DM you our preeclampsia warning signs list.

Join us today in celebrating the rich culture, history, language, and tradition of Indigenous peoples. We also take a moment to recognize the ongoing challenges Indigenous peoples face in the U.S. such as discrimination, poverty, lack of access to healthcare and prenatal care, and more.

More than 25% of extremely low birthweight babies at Intermountain Health St. Vincent Hospital NICU in Billings, Montana are Native American. In an effort to provide culturally appropriate support, one of the things that the NICU Family Support team does is make moccasins from scratch for, and with, the families.

Together, we can all fight for understanding, respect, and health equity for Indigenous communities.

Olivia had a vision for her birth experience. As a doula, she felt prepared and hoped for a birth with minimal medical intervention.

But when her blood pressure became elevated, her plans changed. Olivia navigated an unexpected induction, relying on trusted providers, support and the information they needed to make the best decisions for their growing family.

Pregnancy doesn't always go according to plan, but understanding the signs, risks and options can help families feel more informed and empowered along the way.

When Erica was pregnant, doctors told her that her daughter, Nia, had a rare, lethal form of dwarfism and recommended she terminate the pregnancy. But Erica and her husband, Antoine disagreed and chose hope. After Nia was born, they learned she had been misdiagnosed. Nia spent 118 days in the NICU, underwent successful open-heart surgery, and is now thriving.

At a young age, Nia had experienced both Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and flu, but because Erica stayed on top of vaccinations and treatment, her symptoms weren't as severe as they might have been had she not been informed about preventive measures.

Did you know that most babies get Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) before their second birthday? While most healthy infants experience mild, cold-like symptoms, some are at risk of severe RSV. This includes babies who have health issues or weakened immune systems, are in daycare, or are exposed to secondhand smoke.

Talk to your baby's healthcare provider about ways to prevent RSV, especially if your baby falls into a high-risk category. Stay informed by learning about preventive measures that can help keep your baby safe and healthy.

The The New York Times recently covered a CDC study that found rates of high blood pressure are rising in pregnant women. Between 2016 and 2024, the rate of gestational hypertension, high blood pressure that develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy, in the U.S. increased 73%. For some women with gestational hypertension, they may develop severe hypertension and be at risk for more serious complications later in pregnancy, like preeclampsia.

If you are pregnant or know someone who is pregnant, you should know the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia.

Know what to look for, talk to your doctor about your risk, and ask if low dose aspirin is right for you.

"I didn’t feel like I had the option to rest, so I kept going even when I was exhausted and holding on by a thread," Ashley shares.

"Nearly three years after my first son died after being born at 21 weeks, I found myself sitting in the NICU holding my new baby — just 1 pound, 7 ounces — born at 25 weeks. For 183 days, I pumped, showed up at the hospital, and returned to work just two months into his NICU stay, caring for my own patients. I’m deeply grateful our NICU had a psychologist and social worker who provided a listening ear and a safe space during one of the most fragile seasons of my life. Almost seven years later, faith, community, therapy, and learning to give myself grace have been instrumental in protecting and restoring my mental health."

Mental health is just as critical as physical health — especially for moms of color. Minority maternal mental health deserves more than awareness. It deserves access, investment, and culturally competent care. Did you know that new moms from certain racial and ethnic minority groups are less likely to get treatment for mental health conditions?

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. For new and expecting moms, this is an opportunity to raise awareness around the range of emotions they face, the unique challenges affecting moms who are from minority groups, and resources available for support.

When Erica and Antoine Shoemate learned their daughter, Nia, might not survive because of a rare genetic condition, they faced 118 days of uncertainty in the NICU. Along the way, they experienced the emotional toll that so many NICU families know all too well.

During Minority Mental Health Month, we're shining a light on the inequities that can make it harder for families of color to access the mental health care they need. As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of NICU Family Support®, we're committed to ensuring every family has access to the care, resources, and support they need to thrive.

Every parent deserves compassionate support throughout their NICU journey and beyond—regardless of their race, ethnicity, or ZIP code.

At 29 weeks pregnant, Helen Dubas was diagnosed with life-threatening preeclampsia and delivered her son, Leo. He spent 131 days in the NICU. During that time, their family leaned on March of Dimes NICU Family Support® — now celebrating 25 years of helping families feel less alone when it matters most.

Since 2001, we've reached more than 1.25 million families across the country, helping them feel informed, supported, and less alone during some of their most difficult days.
