Somerville Garden Club The SGC promotes home gardening and horticultural possibilities of Somerville’s public spaces The meetings are open to the public and are wheelchair accessible.

The Somerville Garden Club was founded in 1994 by a group of Somerville residents to promote home gardening as well as the horticultural possibilities of Somerville’s public spaces. Of the club’s over 200 members, some are experienced gardeners, some are beginners; some are residents of Somerville, and about a third come from surrounding communities. All gardening enthusiasts are welcome to partic

ipate in our activities. The SGC meets on the second Wednesday of every month 7:00–9:00 p.m. at the Tufts Administration Building (TAB), 167 Holland St., second floor.

This summer, you may have noticed that Davis Square has more color, a few more places to sit, and a lot more reason to stop and enjoy.

On Friday, August 21, the City of Somerville will celebrate the Davis Square’s “summer glow up” with a ribbon cutting from 4:30 to 5 p.m., directly before the Down in Davis: Alive at Five performance at Statue Park. The event will mark the completion of recent public space improvements in the square, including the activation of the Davis Square Slip Lane and new placemaking art at Statue Park.

Yes, we like hibiscus, too, but have you met its native cousin, swamp rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)? It's more compact and the flowers are just... enormous. Spectacular. A sampling from the general Davis/Ball Square area, plus a photo of a regular hibiscus for comparison.

Hyssops are easy to grow and beloved by bugs. A cluster of anise hyssop Agastache foeniculum) in full bloom on Prospect Hill, and its native cousin, giant purple hyssop (Agastache scrophulariifolia) starting to bloom in East Somerville. How to tell them apart? 1) the scent: only anise hyssop smells like anise, and 2) giant purple grows taller and is a less showy bloomer. Local bees give both ***** reviews.
