The MLC is a non-profit organization that offers out-of-school-time programming for after school, vacation, and evenings plus so much more to serve the youth and families of the Mystic area. Founded in 1971, the mission of the Mystic Learning Center (MLC) is to improve the lives of low-income children and families who live at the Mystic Public Housing Development and surrounding neighborhoods of E

ast Somerville. Our innovative parent and youth service model uses Mystic parents and teens to manage and design all aspects of the program to meet the needs of the community. By being active participants in MLC, residents have the opportunity to enhance their own personal development, have an impact on the development of the program, and make contributions to community life. MLC brings residents together for mutual support as they acquire skills to overcome persistent poverty while creating a healthier community. The Center operates as a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization and is licensed to provide school-age and pre-school age child care by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MLC offers year round educational and recreational activities for youth ages 5-23 during after-school, evening, school-year and summer vacation. The MELC is currently only open to youth ages 5+ until a Preschool Certified Teacher is hired. MLC & MELC are housed in an accessible facility on-site at the Mystic Development which is near public transportation.

Last weeks at MLC was full of fun, creativity, and adventure! The kids enjoyed our Mystic Picnic, Police Night Out, beach days, exciting field trips, and a variety of fun activities. They had plenty of opportunities to play, explore, spend time with friends, and make new summer memories together. It was wonderful filled with laughter, teamwork, new experiences, and lots of fun!

What a blast we had on the water! ⛵️☀️

Our children had the incredible opportunity to spend the day sailing with Community Sailing, Inc. ( Community Boating, Inc. ) on the Charles River. From learning the basics of sailing to building confidence and teamwork, every smile said it all. Thank you to everyone at Community Sailing for an unforgettable experience—we can’t wait to come back!

Weeks 5 and 6 at MLC were full of fun, creativity, and active choices! The kids enjoyed a variety of exciting activities, went sailing, and had so much fun during our beach days. They also worked together to create the MLC Kids Garden sign and loved visiting the garden to see and pick fresh veggies. It was a wonderful two weeks filled with laughter, teamwork, and great summer memories!

Congratulations to our graduates! 🎓

Greylis graduated from Worcester State University with a degree in Public Health and Sociology and plans to study Sonography.

Aniana earned her Associate of Arts degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and hopes to work in publishing or magazines in New York City.

We also celebrate our high school graduates, Tima and Talique, who will attend Bunker Hill Community College to study Art and Computer Engineering.

A special congratulations to our Little Mystic students moving up to MLC—we are excited to see all of our students continue to learn, grow, and succeed!

The MLC team had an AMAZING time participating in the Mystic River Watershed Association’s Annual Herring Run! 🌊✨🏃‍♀️🐟

Over the past few weeks, our children and staff trained hard through our running & endurance programming to get ready for the 5K — and we were so excited to have Somerville PD’s Officer Mackenzie join us along the way!

From training runs to our pre-race pasta party 🍝😄, this experience was all about teamwork, learning, movement, and FUN! We loved learning about the herring that travel through our local rivers while building healthy habits and cheering each other on every step of the way.
