On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom by executive decree in what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day.

Somerville Firefighters Local 76 Executive Board members recently attended the IAFF 3rd District Conference at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Hosted by our own active retiree and IAFF 3rd District Vice President Jay Colbert, the conference brought together fire service leaders and union representatives from across the district for several days of education, networking, and labor-focused training.

The conference featured informative speakers, labor relations courses, and discussions covering critical fire, EMS, and union topics affecting our members and departments throughout the IAFF 3rd District. These educational opportunities provide valuable knowledge and resources that Local 76 can bring back to our membership while continuing to strengthen our union and advocate for the firefighters and citizens we proudly serve. Somerville Firefighters Local 76 remains committed to staying informed, engaged, and prepared to meet the challenges facing today’s fire service and organized labor movement.

Yesterday, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 gathered with family, friends, community leaders, and members of the community for our annual Firefighter Memorial Sunday Service. We extend our sincere gratitude to all of our speakers for their heartfelt words and reflections, and to everyone who attended to pay tribute.

Together, we honored the brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

In the words of Somerville Firefighters Local 76’s Secretary-Treasurer, Bobby Hodnett; “Firefighter Memorial Sunday is the most important day of the year for our department, and it always will be”. That said, we remain committed to preserving the legacy of these brave firefighters and ensuring that their memory lives on for generations to come as we honor them now and until the end of time.

Gone, but never forgotten.

This Sunday, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 will gather for our annual Firefighter Memorial Sunday honoring the memory of our fallen brothers and mark the 52nd Anniversary of the Arrow Paper Fire, a tragedy that claimed the lives of Firefighters Joseph Reilly and Robert Brickley in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice remains a lasting part of our department’s history and serves as a reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness demonstrated by firefighters every day. We invite our members, retirees, families, and friends to join us as we remember Brothers Reilly and Brickley and ensure their legacy is never forgotten.

Firefighter Memorial Sunday Itinerary:

• 8:15 AM – Formation at the Arrow Paper Memorial, 101 South Street
• 8:30 AM – Wreath laying at the memorial, then proceed to 651 Somerville Avenue
• 9:15 AM – Memorial Ceremony at the Lowell Street Fire Station
• Following the ceremony – A catered breakfast will be served for family and friends at the Dante Club, 5 Dante Terrace

Today, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 solemnly remembers the 52nd anniversary of the tragic Arrow Paper Fire on Harding Street in Somerville.

On June 10, 1974, Somerville firefighters responded to a rapidly growing fire at the Arrow Paper Company warehouse. During firefighting operations, a masonry wall collapsed, claiming the lives of Firefighters Joseph Reilly and Robert Brickley. Five other firefighters were injured in the line of duty.

Fifty-two years later, we continue to honor the courage and sacrifice of these two fallen brothers. Their commitment to protecting the residents of Somerville serves as a lasting reminder of the dangers firefighters face and the selfless service they provide to their communities. Their legacy remains forever etched in the history of the Somerville Fire Department and in the hearts of firefighters throughout our city.

Special Signal 10-15 The Chief of Department regrets to announce the death of Firefighter Mike Tracey Ladder 3 retired. I say again…

Mike got on the job as part of the “class of 33” in 1977. He was a Firefighter on Engine 3 and Ladder 3 retiring in 2002.

Yesterday, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 members, along with thousands of brother and sister firefighters from across the fire service, paid our respects to Robert “BK” Kilduff, Jr.

Together, we celebrated the life of a man who embodied everything that is good about our profession. The overwhelming show of support was a testament to the impact BK had on so many lives, both on and off the job.

As our brother was laid to rest, he was given a sendoff worthy of the incredible firefighter, union leader, and man that he was. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrated the life of our brother, forever remembering BK and all that he embodied.

BK’s legacy will always live on through his family, his friends, and through his inspiring of past, present, and future firefighters.

Rest easy, Brother. God Bless!

Today, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 members battled a 2-alarm fire in a high-rise building at the Row Hotel in Assembly Square. Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of the firefighters on duty, all occupants were safely protected, the fire was extinguished, and the incident was brought under control.

This fire serves as another reminder that the Somerville Fire Department remains severely understaffed and operates well below the staffing levels needed to adequately protect our city, especially when responding to complex/labor-intensive incidents such as high-rise fires. These emergencies require significant manpower to safely conduct fire attack, search and rescue operations, ventilation, evacuation assistance, and firefighter safety functions.

We thank all of the members who responded today and performed their duties under challenging circumstances. Despite not having the staffing and resources necessary to meet accepted standards for firefighter and public safety, our members once again answered the call and ensured the safety of the residents of the city and our fellow firefighters.

The citizens of Somerville deserve a properly staffed fire department, and our firefighters deserve the resources necessary to do their jobs safely and effectively.
