Somerville Firefighters Local 76 is proud to announce our annual Davy Fitz Memorial Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Hillview Golf Course in North Reading, MA!

Somerville Firefighters Local 76 will be hosting a UDS Cancer Screening Event at the Dante Club on September 8th, 9th, & 10th.

Cancer continues to be one of the greatest threats facing firefighters, killing far too many of our brothers and sisters. Early detection is one of our best weapons in the fight against this devastating disease.

We’ve seen the importance of early detection firsthand with our longtime friend and union leader, PFFM Trustee Billy Hill. Billy was diagnosed with cancer after undergoing cancer screening at a PFFM event. Thanks to that early detection, along with the treatment and advocacy of our true friend and ally, Dr. Betsy O’Donnell, Director of the Multi-Cancer Early Detection Clinic at Dana-Farber, Billy is succeeding in his battle and doing great today. Billy’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of getting screened, knowing your risks and options, and not waiting until it’s too late.

Please take advantage of this opportunity. Early detection can save your life.

The powerful documentary “Burnin’ Down The House” will have three showings at 7:00 PM on August 24th, 25th, and 26th right here in Somerville at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square.

Featuring Lt. Jason Burns, Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts District Vice President, the film highlights the deteriorating conditions of fire stations in Fall River and the urgent need to invest in the infrastructure that protects those who protect our communities.

Unfortunately, these issues are not unique to Fall River. Many of our fire stations here in Somerville face similar challenges—and in some cases, the conditions are even worse.

We are asking Somerville’s city leaders to attend one of these three showings. See the film firsthand, and consider how its message applies to Somerville firefighters and the stations where our members work, live, and respond from every day.

Members of Somerville Firefighters Local 76’s Executive Board were in Arlington, Texas this past week attending the 58th IAFF Convention alongside thousands of firefighters, emergency medical workers, and union leaders from across the United States and Canada.

Delegates came together to discuss/debate policies, vote on critical resolutions, and help shape the IAFF’s priorities and strategy for the next two years.

We are proud to have Local 76 well represented and on the forefront of working to strengthen our union, on the International, State, and Local levels, and protecting the interests of our members.

BURNIN’ DOWN THE HOUSE

Fire stations are supposed to be places where firefighters live and prepare to protect their communities, not buildings that put the health and safety of those firefighters at risk.

“Burnin’ Down The House” is a powerful documentary featuring Lt. Jason Burns, Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts District Vice President, highlighting the deteriorating conditions of fire stations in Fall River and the urgent need for investment in the infrastructure that protects those who protect us.

Unfortunately, the conditions highlighted in this film are not unique to Fall River. Here in Somerville, many of our fire stations face similar challenges, and in some cases, the conditions are even worse. Our members continue to serve with professionalism and dedication despite working in aging facilities that deserve the same attention and investment as the communities we protect.

-World Premiere of the film will be this Thursday, August 6th at Hanover Theatre.

Congrats John, FF DeCourcey started his career in Somerville. He was appointed in February 2000 to the Somerville Fire department and transferred to Cambridge in 2007!!! Good Luck!!

Effective July 17, 2026, at 0700 hours, Firefighter John R. DeCourcey retired from the Cambridge Fire Department.

Firefighter DeCourcey was appointed to the Department on January 21, 2007, was assigned to multiple Fire Stations and faithfully served the citizens of Cambridge with dedication, professionalism, and commitment throughout his career.

On behalf of the members of the Cambridge Fire Department, we extend our sincere appreciation for his years of service and wish John and his family many years of happiness, good health, and fulfillment in his well-earned retirement
