Today, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 members battled a 2-alarm fire in a high-rise building at the Row Hotel in Assembly Square. Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of the firefighters on duty, all occupants were safely protected, the fire was extinguished, and the incident was brought under control.

This fire serves as another reminder that the Somerville Fire Department remains severely understaffed and operates well below the staffing levels needed to adequately protect our city, especially when responding to complex/labor-intensive incidents such as high-rise fires. These emergencies require significant manpower to safely conduct fire attack, search and rescue operations, ventilation, evacuation assistance, and firefighter safety functions.

We thank all of the members who responded today and performed their duties under challenging circumstances. Despite not having the staffing and resources necessary to meet accepted standards for firefighter and public safety, our members once again answered the call and ensured the safety of the residents of the city and our fellow firefighters.

The citizens of Somerville deserve a properly staffed fire department, and our firefighters deserve the resources necessary to do their jobs safely and effectively.

BK suffered catastrophic injuries after falling from the third floor of a burning home at 18 Treadway Road in Dorchester. Despite the extraordinary efforts of fellow firefighters on scene, Boston EMS, and the staff at Boston Medical Center, BK succumbed to his injuries.

He leaves behind two adult children, a loving girlfriend, and her children.

BK dedicated his life to serving others. Whether as a United States Marine, a Boston firefighter, or during his 15 years working for the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, BK was always willing to step up and help anyone in need.

He was known throughout the PFFM and IAFF as someone who could always be counted on, no matter the task, the hour, or the challenge.
His commitment to the fire service, organized labor, and helping others left a lasting impact on so many people across Massachusetts and beyond.

BK’s loss is being felt deeply by his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the communities he spent his life protecting and serving. During this incredibly difficult time, we are asking for your support for those he leaves behind.

Please consider making a donation in memory of Robert“BK” Kilduff, Jr. Every contribution, no matter the amount, will help support his family and honor the legacy of a man who gave so much to others throughout his life.

Thank you for your support, prayers, and solidarity.

Today, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 honors and remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, or on duty with our Brothers and Sisters at the fire station, let us all take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the day and honor those who gave everything for our freedom.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

As the weather starts heating up and temperatures continue to rise, Somerville Firefighters Local 76 would like to remind everyone to practice safety when traveling with children and pets.

Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly and become deadly in a very short amount of time.

Please stay safe, stay hydrated, and always double check your car before walking away.

The lAFF and PFFM have been raising concerns about the risks posed by single-stair building designs consisting of merely one single form of egress throughout the whole structure, and the dangers they pose in fire emergencies and life safety.

Somerville Firefighters Local 76 stands against this concept in its entirety. We do so for the safety of our members, the safety of the citizens that we serve, and every person in Somerville and across Massachusetts that will inevitably be affected by this dangerous tactic. We urge the City of Somerville to not support this plan in any way.
